Marine lubricants are used in propulsion engines for both large deep-water vessels and small pleasure vessels. These lubricants can also be used for power generation. The type of engine in the vessel determines the type of lubricant that is required.
Four-cycle engines use trunk piston engine oil. This type of engine has a common sump for the crankcase and cylinder. Two-cycle engines use a marine cylinder lubricant for injection into the cylinder and separate oil is used in the crankcase.
