Molds are used in manufacturing to create products that need to be a specific, uniform shape and size. A mold typically resembles a hollowed-out block and can be made of metal, plaster, plastic, or a composite material. Molds can be designed for single or multiple uses. A liquid is poured into the mold, where it hardens into the final product. Some materials used in molds include plastic, metal, ceramic, fiberglass resin, rubber, and glass. Getting the liquid material into the mold can be accomplished in many different ways, including injecting the substance into the mold, pouring it into a hole at the top of the mold, and compressing it between two halves of the mold. The particular method used depends on the material being molded, the precision required in the final product, and the budget of the manufacturer.

When working with molds, a releasing agent is often used to prevent the hardened product from sticking to the inside of the mold. Specialized mold-cleaning solutions might also be needed to remove debris inside the mold after use, depending on the type of mold and the specific material being used in the mold.
