About You

  • You have experience building high traffic 24x7 web applications in PHP
  • You've dealt with scalability issues, caching, queuing and distributed storage
  • You're well versed in OOP, synchronous and asynchronous design patterns, the DRY principle, and unit testing (maybe even TDD)
  • You have deep experience with relational databases and database architecture (maybe some NoSQL experience too)
  • You're a master of HTML/CSS/Javascript and can bend the browser to your will
  • You're familiar with MVC and application frameworks for PHP
  • You've worked with a DVCS like Git (or are excited to work somewhere that uses it)
  • You thrive in a fast paced, agile, iterative and collaborative engineering environment where quality well tested code is highly valued
  • You're experienced with technologies like MySQL, MongoDB, RabbitMQ, Memcached, Nginx, Lucene, Sphinx and Yii
  • You have a solid foundation in computer science with strong competencies in data structures, algorithms and software design
  • Ideally you have a degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Applied Math or Physics and/or 5+ years of relevant engineering experience

System Administrator / DevOps Engineer

Job Description

Do you want to work in a high traffic web environment where you can help to build a growing DevOps culture? Do you sleep soundly because the systems you support are so HA and well tuned you almost never get a page? Are you a network warrior who fears no protocol? Does Linus Torvalds call you with his Linux questions (and you can support some Windows systems in a pinch)? If so, Business.com is looking for you!

About You

  • You have 5+ years experience supporting high traffic, highly available, 24x7 web applications and medium or large sized server deployments
  • You have deep Linux experience (preferably with CentOS/RHEL)
  • You know how to scale horizontally or vertically depending on the situation
  • You've been using a configuration management tool like Puppet or Chef for a while now (bonus points for Salt Stack!)
  • You have experience supporting the PHP/MySQL based web application deployments
  • You've supported various databases before MySQL, MSSQL, etc (maybe even MongoDB)
  • You have experience supporting additional web technologies like Nginx, Varnish, Memcached, Redis, RabbitMQ, etc
  • You have strong networking experience including enterprise grade networking hardware from vendors like Citrix, Juniper, and Brocade and protocols like UDP, TCP, BGP, FCP, PPTP, etc
  • You have experience with SANs (preferably with Netapp)
  • You have experience with VMware ESX environments
  • You know shell scripting experience (bonus for scripting languages like PHP, Python, Ruby, etc!)
  • You've had experience with CDN technologies
  • You're familiar with Agile Methodology practices (Kanban or Scrum)
  • You've got a passion for best practices, automation and documentation

Desktop Systems Administrator

Business.com is seeking a Desktop Systems Administrator to help us grow our IT and web development environment. The Desktop System Administrator's typical day will include providing the 1st line of technical support for our Carlsbad office. The Desktop Systems Administrator is responsible for supporting Windows and Mac systems in the corporate environment and in our production environment. This includes desktops and laptops. The Desktop Systems Administrator will need to build, setup, maintain, implement, and troubleshoot technology problems related to laptops and desktops that affect end-user productivity.

He or she will work closely with all users and management for issue resolutions. He or she will help to provide monitoring for our IT and development infrastructure and assist in its growth. He or she also will need to understand fundamental IT concepts regarding hardware and software, networking, data storage, data backups, and monitoring. The Desktop System Administrator will report to the Chief Technology Officer.

Additional responsibilities include

  • Assist users with their software application requirements and access to IT resources via our helpdesk ticketing system.
  • Performing basic troubleshooting tasks and operating system support on Microsoft Windows OS and Mac OS X.
  • Setting up new users\' systems and environments
  • Manage the Windows Active Directory domain
  • Configuring new applications for emerging business needs
  • Mobile device setup, installation and/or post installation support
  • Provide network, phone system, and desktop support
  • Participate in and drive projects related to Corporate desktop computing such as email, anti-virus software, archiving, backups
  • Document standards, best practices and policies
  • Maintain and organize technology inventory

Required Skills

  • Candidates should have minimum of 2 years of IT support experience
  • Communicate clearly and patiently via email, phone, and in-person conversations
  • Core competency with Microsoft Windows and Familiarity with data backup concepts and systems
  • Core understanding of common PC & Mac hardware components and connections.
  • Good problem-solving skills, ability to troubleshoot without continual escalation to higher levels of support.
  • Strong working knowledge of common applications: email (Gmail), Google drive, desktop publishing (Microsoft Office), web browsers (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Chrome)
  • Good data management, organizing, and prioritizing skills. You will be presented with numerous challenges and tasks simultaneously and be expected to track them all through to completion.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, willingness to learn new procedures and tasks
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds without assistance for the racking or other installation needs for new systems
  • Mac OS X (OS installation, account creation and maintenance, file sharing concepts, printing)
  • Hardware/software training and/or certification in systems
  • Has experience setup and deploy Audio/Visual equipment

Web Content Coordinator

Must have the creativity and research skills to write forward thinking, entertaining, educational, sharable and sticky content that will be used for the acquisition and engagement of Business.com prospects and clients.

The Web Content Coordinator will work closely with the Director of Marketing and source content pieces from our network of freelance writers as well as internal resources. Applicant must have experience with social channels: Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn, Facebook and Pinterest as the coordinator will also push out content via our social graphs. In addition, the Web Content Coordinator will also monitor our engagement and measure benchmarks and the impact of our programs based on visibility, views, reach, registrations, downloads, viral impact and online conversations.

This position has a high level of visibility and our preferred candidate will be a strong leader, excellent collaborator and have the ability to communicate clearly and compellingly verbally and written with all levels of the organization and our customers. We wear many hats here so candidates must be highly adaptable and able to iterate quickly.

Qualifications

  • Writing, editing and proofreading experience
