Admiralty Law

Tips & Advice to help you make your decision on Admiralty Law

Admiralty law is also referred to as maritime law and establishes jurisdiction in matters of private international laws as well as in domestic laws. It governs legal situations encountered on the seas that include navigation, seaman, cargo, towage, docks, insurance, maritime liens, shipping, and maritime commerce among other issues. Ships at sea display a flag that indicates the national admiralty laws they are subject to. As an example, U.S. ships display a U.S. flag, which indicates they are governed by U.S. admiralty law, even if the ships are in a region thousands of miles away from U.S. soil. The ships must however have a legitimate association with the country whose flag it is flying.

Admiralty law specifies an operating procedure in regards to salvaging, whether it involves human lives or treasures. Mariners are required by these laws to attempt to save lives at risk regardless of any rewards that may be offered. Also, they can claim salvage rights regarding any property they rescue at sea, such as cargo or even a ship that was lost at sea.

The law also specifies that ship owners provide appropriate medical care to employed and injured sailors. They are also financially responsible for passenger injuries that occur due to negligence. Read more about admiralty law from the links on this Business.com page.
