Purchasing Resources for Selective Service System (SSS)

There are certain things that are an expected coming of age tradition. Many people expect car related items on their 16th birthday and a drink with friends on their 21st. Men in the US can expect to have to register with the selective service system (SSS) on or near their 18th birthday. This service is in place to register and monitor men between the ages of 18 and 25 for possible military service. The only time the list is used in the event of war when the regular volunteer military branches require additional personnel and a draft is instituted.

Certain people are required to register with the selective service system (SSS) including American born males and foreign men living the United States from 18 to 25 years of age. This registration is to take place within 30 days of the person's birthday if living in the US at the time. Failure or refusal to register is punishable by law and often carries a fine of up to $250,000. Unregistered men are also banned from receiving certain types of government funded privileges such as college student grants and loans. In some cases, unregistered, eligible men are barred from holding federal and state jobs.
