A Guide to Staplers, Punchers, and Trimmers

In any home, office, or institutional setting, organizational tools can be commonly seen everywhere.   Some of the most common ways in which people organize their documents is with staplers, punchers, and trimmers. These instruments will allow users to keep track of their loose papers and enable neat, efficient organization.

Staplers

When purchasing a stapler, there are several factors to consider first. You should choose a stapler based on the type of documents to bind together. For thin paper material, manual staplers are best suited for this function. But for heavy-duty, thick paper, you may want to consider an electric stapler. Another consideration is the amount of documents your stapler is needed to handle. Smaller quantities of paper can be handled by manual staplers, while large quantities up to a hundred sheets may require an electronic or heavy-duty model.

Types of Staplers

Manual Staplers: Manual, hand-held staplers are the most common staplers available, and are seen in many home and business offices. They are affordable, capable of binding about twenty sheets of paper, and come in a variety of shapes and colors.

Electric Staplers: The main distinguishing quality of electric staplers is that they use a motorized staple head that is capable of driving a staple through thick stacks of documents. Electric staplers are extremely efficient, and are generally used to bind large quantities of paper together. Different types of electric staplers include freestanding, saddle, or hand-held models.

Heavy-Duty Staplers: For binding over one hundred sheets of paper, heavy-duty staplers are the best option. Both manual and electronic heavy-duty staplers are available, and can handle large quantities of documents.

Punchers

Paper hole punchers are useful for binding documents and organizing loose sheets of papers into folders. These instruments can be customized by applying punch heads with different diameters, allowing for greater organization.

Types of Punchers

Single Hole Punchers: Single hole punchers are useful when organizing notecards, punching tickets, or for custom punching. However, they are not as commonly seen as the other two types.

Two Hole Punchers: Two hole punchers are most commonly seen in legal and medical environments, to allow sheets of paper to fill into two hole clipboards or binders.

Three Hole Punchers: Three hole punchers are the most common type of puncher of the three. Many people use three hole punchers to allow papers to fit into three hole binders. These punchers are available in both electronic and manual versions, and can be customized based on hole size.

Trimmers

Trimmers are used to cut paper into different sizes and shapes. There are a number of trimmers available, depending on the volume and frequency of your cutting needs.

Types of Trimmers

Economic Paper Trimmers: These trimmers are distinguishable by their metal cutting arm and wooden base. Economic trimmers are one of the most common paper trimmers, and can typically cut around ten sheets of paper at once.

Rotary Paper Trimmer: Rotary trimmers use a round razor blade to cut paper. These instruments are distinguished by their precision and are well suited for photography applications.

Stack Paper Trimmers: A heavy-duty paper cutter, stack trimmers are capable of cutting large quantities of paper. Stack trimmers are typically used in industrial and commercial settings, and not designed for personal home use.
