Many individuals, education institutions, and companies are relying on whiteboards for performing many functions. Whiteboards have become a popular alternative to chalkboards for a number of reasons. Whiteboards are used in a variety of applications and settings. Some of the more common places that use whiteboards are schools, businesses, governments, and libraries. In addition, many individuals purchase whiteboard surfaces for personal use at home or in small offices. The versatility and affordability of whiteboards makes them a viable option for many situations and uses.
Types of Whiteboards
When it comes to whiteboard surfaces, there are four types of materials that are commonly used:
1. Melamine (Plastic):
Melamine is a resin-filled paper that is placed over a substrate surface. These surfaces can be easily scratched, and will become less erasable over time. Melamine boards are typically the least expensive option for whiteboards, and can be found in most office supply stores.
2. Painted Steel or Aluminum:
This surface consists of spraying a special paint on a steel or aluminum surface. These surfaces typically last longer than melamine surfaces, and tend to be much smoother.
3. Porcelain or enamel-on-steel:
This surface involves glass that is fired, and then placed onto a steel surface in a kiln. The distinguishing factors of porcelain are that it is extremely durable and scratch resistant, and does not absorb dry erase ink. This surface is best for high-use applications such as classrooms and businesses.
4. Hardcoat Laminate:
Laminate surfaces are the least commonly seen in whiteboard surfaces. They are less porous and resistant to staining, and most hardcoat laminate surfaces should possess a lifetime warranty.
Tips for Cleaning Whiteboards
Though whiteboards are incredibly easy to use, improper use and cleaning can damage the board. Whiteboard owners should apply the following steps to make sure that their whiteboards last as long as possible:
1. Eraser:
Though dry erase markers can be cleaned with cloth or paper towels, or even with your own hand, it is recommended that owners should use a proper dry erase marker to remove their work. Doing so will help to preserve the surface of the whiteboard, and allow it to last longer.
2. Cleaning Products:
Avoid using standard household or abrasive cleaning solutions on your board. This can damage the surface of the board, and make it unsuitable for future use. Instead, use brands that are specifically designed for cleaning whiteboards.
3. Removing Old Marks:
Sometimes, when your work is left on a whiteboard for too long, it can be hard to remove. In order to remove old marks, you should use a dry erase marker to write over the old marks. Wait a few minutes, and then use an eraser: the old marks should remove along with the new. If this doesn’t work, then you can also use a cleaning solution such as WD-40 or dry cleaner fluid.
Chalk tends to leave residue and dust everywhere, while dry erase markers dries quickly and can be easily removed with a cloth or eraser. This is especially beneficial for people who are allergic to dust or debris. Dry erase markers are available in a wide variety of colors, allowing for vibrant visuals and presentation. In addition, the whiteboard’s clear and white surface allows it to double as a projection screen.
