Genichi Taguchi developed Taguchi methods and Design of Experiments (DOE). Taguchi's methods are a statistical approach, which was first used for improving the quality of goods in the manufacturing industry. These methods are now being used in biotechnology, engineering and marketing.

Taguchi provided three main contributions for statistical methods. The first is called the Taguchi loss function. The basic premise is that quality does not decrease when quality standards are exceeded. Loss increases when variations increase away from the intended standard.
