Most templates measure banner ad dimensions in pixels and come in various sizes, some of which have specific names, such as leaderboard and skyscraper. The type of file format or the application that created the animation is also an important way to identify banner ads.

Pixel

A pixel is a tiny square of color on your computer screen. These squares make up the images you see. Graphic artists and web designers use the pixel as the standard unit of measure for banner ads, so a banner ad's size will be a certain number of pixels wide by a specific number of pixels tall.

Skyscraper

A skyscraper is any tall, skinny banner ad. These ads are a good shape for the side panels of blogs or other sites with wide pages and multiple columns. Make sure websites you want to advertise on have this kind of format before designing one of these.

Leaderboard

Leaderboard refers to the combination of the size and position of a banner ad. A leaderboard banner ad is typically 780 x 90 pixels in size, and website designers position it near the top of a web page, usually below the page header and the content.
