A Guide to Gas Gift Cards

A gas gift card may seem impersonal, but for someone who spends time commuting, and money filling up the gas tank on a regular basis, it can help curb an unavoidable business and personal expense. So even if a gas gift card isn’t sexy, it is definitely something any driver will appreciate.

A few things to keep in mind when shopping for pre-paid gas gift cards:

Go directly to the source

It’s natural to want a universal gas gift card that works at any gas station in any city or state, but retailers vary across the United States, making that a difficult proposition. Avoid purchasing gas gift cards that aren’t tied to a specific gas company. Generic cards, or those sold in bulk, may include purchase fees and shipping charges that add to the overall cost of the card. Most major gas stations – Exxon, Shell, Chevron, Shell – sell gas gift cards at their brick and mortar locations as well as online. Large discount retailers often carry a wide variety of gift cards, including gas gift cards, in their stores, too. Try to find out where the gift card recipient usually shops for gas and, if possible, get a gas gift card for that specific station.

Gas station chains usually offer their gas gift cards in set amounts that range from $10 to $250, but some allow you to determine the amount you want to pre-pay. Another option is a pre-paid Visa or MasterCard that can be used at any gas station that accepts credit and debit cards.

What are the benefits of gas gift cards?

Pre-paid gas gift cards are convenient and useful, and if you shop around you will find some gift cards that offer a discount (often 3-5%) on gas when you purchase the card online. A gas gift card, unlike a gas credit card, does not accrue interest. Some gas gift card providers allow the user to check the card’s balance online, so there’s no need to ask the gas station cashier to check it.

Gas Gift Card Restrictions, Fees and Expiration Dates

On May 22 2009, the Credit CARD Act of 2009 was signed into law, and it went into effect on August 22, 2010. Most of this Act relates to credit cards, but it does include gift card regulations for store issued gift cards (physical/plastic, electronic/email) and bank issued gift cards (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover). There are additional State regulations that vary by location and can be found online, but the Federal regulations dictate that gift card funds may not expire before five years, and that if a gift card is reloadable, any funds added to the card must remain valid for a full five years.

With gas prices ticking upward gas gift cards are a compelling option for business-related gift giving.
