Tips & Advice to help you make your decision on Special Effects

Special effects are often used in the entertainment industry to simulate the events that occur. They are used in film, television and in the theater. Business.com is a good source of information on special effects; it has information on special effects courses at college and companies that provide special effects.

Special effects can be split into the categories of mechanical effects and optical effects. Mechanical effects can also be known as physical effects, and they are usually achieved during the shooting of material for film and television. This can include adding atmospheric effects such as wind, fog and rain, or other mechanical effects that are commonly used in productions, such as blowing up buildings, vehicles and general pyrotechnics. Mechanical effects can also be incorporated into the set design and makeup department by using insubstantial walls to enhance fight scenes and using prosthetic makeup to make monsters appear more authentic. Optical effects are achieved in a number of ways. A film may use multiple exposures during shooting, or they may be created during postproduction processes using an optical printer.

The most recent category of special effects was developed during the 1990s. This category is computer-generated imagery (CGI). This type of special effect is more advanced than those previously seen and gives productions more realism when portraying events.
