Television Programming

Tips & Advice to help you make your decision on Television Programming

Television programming, also known as broadcast programming, is the act of choosing which television programs will be shown on a given station during a given time period. The goal of television programming is to maximize viewership, both overall as well as during the specific time slots most valuable to advertisers. Television programmers must also ensure that all of the available airtime is covered with shows, commercials, or public service announcements.

Television programmers employ a variety of strategies in an attempt to attract and retain viewers of shows broadcast on their networks. Many stations place similar shows back to back in order to keep viewers watching for long periods of time. They also fill specific time slots with shows aimed at a certain demographic, such as filling the early Saturday morning time slot with children's cartoons. Some television programmers schedule high-performing shows in time slots opposite those of a competing show on another station, forcing the viewer to choose between stations. Another common technique is to air commercials for the next show during a broadcast in order to get viewers interested in seeing the following show. Television programmers sometimes fill undesirable time slots with reruns instead of risking a new show on that slot.
