One of the most common fixtures of the moving process is cardboard boxes used to store and pack items. Generally, moving boxes are similar to other types of cardboard shipping boxes, and can be used for a variety of different purposes. Unless customers decide to purchase a box made from durable, thicker material, most cardboard boxes can be used for the purposes of moving.
When purchasing cardboard boxes, it is important to pick a variety of different boxes that can be used to fit your items. Make sure that you pick boxes that will be easy to carry, and are durable enough to store heavy goods.
Types of Moving Boxes
When starting to store your belongings, you’ll need boxes that are appropriate for different sized items. The following are different types of boxes to suit the variety of items to pack away in your moving process.
Small Boxes:
The dimensions of small boxes are commonly 16 by 12.5 by 12.5 inches, or 1.5 cubic feet. These boxes are mainly used for storing smaller items, such as books, dishes, or kitchen items. Though these boxes have a capacity of up to 60 lbs, it is recommended that around 50 lbs of items are stored, so they can be easily moved.
Medium boxes:
Medium boxes have a dimension of 18 by 16 by 16 inches, or 3.0 cubic feet. These boxes are viewed as the all-purpose box, and can store up to 65 lbs. Medium boxes can be used to store a variety of different items, such as large kitchen items, clothing, or electronics.
Large Boxes:
Large boxes have a dimension of 18 by 18 by 24 inches, or 4.5 cubic feet. Large boxes are taller than medium boxes, but have the same circumference. Therefore, large boxes are ideal for storing long objects, such as lamps or children’s toys.
Extra Large Boxes:
There are two types of extra large boxes; a rectangular box and a square-shaped box. These boxes are best for storing comforters, blankets, and pillows. One important tip for using extra large boxes is to make sure they are not used to store large, heavy items. Otherwise, lifting and carrying heavy large boxes may exacerbate the moving process.
Wardrobe Boxes:
Wardrobe boxes are used to store clothes that cannot be folded and need to stay upright during the moving process. Items that are placed in wardrobe boxes can include dresses and suits. These boxes have a metal bar placed in the interior to hang items in, and can come in a variety of different sizes.
Mattress Boxes:
During the moving process, mattresses are commonly wrapped in plastic, which is cheaper and easier to apply. However, for an extra touch of protection, movers have the option of storing their mattresses in boxes.
