The standard method used at each end of a communication message is known as a protocol. Email is stored on a server and in order to access it, users use a mail client which exchanges information with the server using a series of several protocols. There are four basic email protocols: IMAP, POP3, SMTP and HTTP.
IMAP or Internet Message Access Protocol allows users to retrieve email from a local server. Because the protocol involves small amounts of data, it works well when slow connections are in play like that provided by a modem. POP3 or Post Office Protocol version 3 allows users to access and download their email messages and then disconnect from the server. SMTP or Simple Mail Transfer Protocol comes into play when a person sends an email. It allows the email to go to the recipient's server. HTTP is not strictly one of the an email protocols but can be used as one.
Someone involved in IT or having responsibility over company email communications would have need to know about email protocol, what they are, how they work and related matters. Business.com can help you find the information you need with their exemplary business and email resources.
