A high performing business person, like a professional athlete, needs to be able to perform well under any circumstance. You can't just rely on the home court advantage to be at your best when it comes to work.
As our business circles expand wider and wider, we often find ourselves on the road to meet clients or attend a business conference.
I know as the Director of Marketing for my company, I often find myself on the road, sometimes as long as two weeks at a time. Yet, like anyone, I find ways to keep myself on top of my game, even when I'm in unfamiliar territory. Related: Traveling to a trade show? Catch Some Zzzz's
This is not new information: sleep is important. There are all sorts of benefits to being well rested and all sorts of consequences when you're not. So know your body, even when you travel. If you need 9 hours of sleep at night to feel your best for an early morning meeting, then allow yourself that time to rest. Don't feel that you need to take a red eye flight or stay out for an extra round of drinks. Everyone needs their beauty sleep.
- A handy iPhone app I use to get the best out of my night's sleep is Sleep Cycle. I just place the phone at the head of my bed while I sleep and it tracks my sleep cycle through the night to wake me up in my lightest sleep, instead of mid-dream. This leaves me feeling rested in the morning, instead of rudely interrupted by my alarm.
Water, Water, Water!
Hydration is vital when traveling. It's so easy to hop on a plane or jump in a car and forget to drink water. But even if you're just sitting there, you're losing water through sweat and simple daily body function. A simple rule of thumb is just to drink when you're thirsty-coffee doesn't count! If you're thirsty, it means your body's already craving water. Your thirst mechanism is like a built in warning against dehydration.
- One easy way to remind yourself to stay hydrated is to carry a reusable water bottle with you. This will help you track your water intake throughout the day and remind you to refill once you run out. Although airport security won't let you carry a full bottle of water through, TSA does allow empty bottles and you can fill up at a drinking fountain on the other side.
Okay. Maybe "get buff" is an exaggeration. But definitely find time to exercise, whether it be lifting weights or taking a walk around the block. Exercise keeps your body strong and healthy, and gets your endorphins pumping. A quick little workout will leave you in a better mood and give you a boost to make it through the rest of your day.
- Remember: no matter how many meetings you have scheduled for the day, there's always time to get out and stretch your legs. You'll be surprised how much better you'll feel simply by taking a stroll.
Keep Your Routine
Just because you're on the road doesn't mean you should change your entire way of living. Try to keep some consistency, especially in your daily routines. If at home you get up each morning and brush your teeth and take your vitamins, then on the road you do the same.
- I know bouncing back and forth across time zones and jumping from hotel room to hotel room can keep your body reeling, but that's no excuse not to control what's in your power. Consistent daily routines will help you feel a little more relaxed and help your body acclimate to any new location.
Traveling for work can be both an honor and a hassle and everyone always prefers sleeping in their own bed. But being on the road is no justification for striking out. Always remember that your business and your clients rely on you to be at the top of your game no matter where you are.
