2U Rack Servers

As their name states, 2U rack servers take up 2 units of space on a standard server rack. More powerful than their 1U counterparts, 2U racks still manage to bring you power and flexibility without taking up too much space. In addition, several affordable two unit rackmount servers can be chained together, creating an incredibly powerful server array.

There are almost endless options when shopping for 2U racks. Most traditional computer manufacturers have a full line of two unit rack servers, and several companies also create fully-customized server options. As a result, you must take into account:

1. Whether a 2U server will provide you with enough power and storage space for your network, and if not, whether buying several 2U server racks is a good option for you.

2. Whether to buy a pre-built or a custom made 2U rack server.

3. Where to by your 2U rack mounted PC servers from.

Determine if a 2U server is right for you

2U rack servers can pack quite a punch for a unit of its size. That being said, the power a 2U rack gives you is still considered mid-range, when compared to larger rackmount units and tower servers. As such, make sure a 2U rack server will give you enough power. Another option is to buy several two unit rackmount servers, and chain them together to add power to your system.

Check out traditional computer manufacturers' offerings

The first place to look for your 2U rack servers should be the traditional well-known computer manufacturers. Most of these companies, such as Dell, HP, and MPC, produce a full like of 2U racks, pre-built at a reasonable price. In addition, when you purchase from these companies, you will receive their full warranty and support services, which will be invaluable in maintaining your servers.

Look into custom server options

If the pre-built servers you looked at just don't seem to be the right fit, customization is another option. Several companies will build your 2U server from the ground up. While in some cases these units may cost a little more, the end result is a 2U rack server that is tailored specifically to the needs of your network.

  • Once you have determined that a 2U rack server is right for your network, figure out whether a pre-built or customized server is your best solution. Even pre-built servers can be added onto, so both options will provide you with a long-term solution.
