Diodes

Tips & Advice to help you make your decision on Diodes

Diodes are electrical components that control the flow of current in an electrical system, such as on a circuit board in a computer. Electrical current can flow in the forward or reverse direction. The diode performs the same function as a check valve or a train track switching lever. It allows the flow of current to go in one direction, while preventing current flow in the other.

When diodes allow current to flow, they are called forward-biased. When they prevent the flow of current, they are called reverse-biased. Diodes are either semiconductors or vacuum tubes. Semiconductor diodes are by far the most common type and come in two capacities. Semiconductor signal diodes are used to regulate small currents, while rectifier diodes are used to regulate large currents.

Diodes come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. If you dismantle the nearest electronic device, you can identify the diodes by looking for the cylindrical or rectangular device with a wire coming out of each end. The wires look a bit like cat whiskers. Ordinary diodes are made of silicon but can be made of other conductive material, such as germanium.
