Magnetics

Tips & Advice to help you make your decision on Magnetics

Magnets have been studied by humans for over 2,500 years and have long enthralled scientists and laypeople alike with their unique properties. In ancient Greece, Aristotle noted that the ancient scholar Thales had studied magnetics and attempted to divine the secrets of these seemingly magical materials, and in India, Sushruta was using magnets in his surgeries.

Modern magnets fall into two main categories. Permanent magnets are magnetic objects that constantly exhibit their own magnetic fields, like a magnetic ribbon that sticks to a car, or a magnet on a refrigerator. These are always magnetic, and are unable to be switched off. Depending on the material that they are made from and the means by which they were magnetized, permanent magnets may have a very strong or very weak magnetic field.

The other main category consists of electromagnets. An electromagnet is a magnetic field that is created by the flow of electrons through a wire. These can be switched on or off, and can even be flip-flopped to reverse their polarity by changing the flow of electrons through the wires. Electromagnets are found in a wide range of devices, including everything from electronic toys to particle accelerators.
