Multistation Access Units (MAUs)

Multistation access units are hubs that connect a group of computers to a Token Ring local area network. For example, MAU hardware might connect six computers to computer network MAU hardware in another office that serves six other computers. In a typical ring configuration, the networking MAUs (also called MSAUs) allow every message to pass through every computer one at a time.

The purpose of MAU hardware for computer networking is to protect the network. If one computer fails, the networking MAUs can bypass it and the ring will remain intact. For larger networks, two additional ports on the multistation access units (MAUs) permit the connection of multiple multistation access units together. The network multistation access unit is usually stored in a wiring closet with cables that extend to a faceplate connection in the wall.

Because MAU networking equipment and MAU network accessories vary, research the following:

1. What type of MAU multistation access unit is recommended for my computer local area network size?

2. What MAU network accessories would improve the performance of the network multistation access unit I select?

3. What multistation access unit price should I expect to pay for a network multistation access unit?

Compare multistation access units for applicable features

Prices and configurations for multistation access units vary widely. Some units are for small network connections, others for giant systems. Research the types of computer network MAU hardware is right for your network.

Identify the MAU network accessories that would enhance your system

In addition to the MAU networking equipment, there are a number of MAU networking accessories. These items include connection cables, cabinets, adapters, switches, remote control units, and Token Ring cards. Depending on the size of your network and the physical setting, you might find some or all of these MAU network accessories useful.

Choose the multistation access unit based on features and price

The multistation access unit price is based on size, complexity, and desired features. Because computer networks vary greatly, prices for networking MAUs does too. Catalogs and websites offer the capability to compare features and prices.

  • Be sure your multistation access unit is the right fit for the size and complexity of your network. Include the appropriate accessories to add convenience.
