OC-192 Broadband Basics


OC-192 broadband basics include the fact that Optical Carrier (OC) levels are a range of signals carried on a Synchronous Optical NETworking (SONET) network. The number 192 indicates that this speed is 192 times faster than the data rate of the bit stream carried by the signal.

Optical Carrier 192 is also known as Synchronous Transport Module 64 (STM-64) or 10G SONET. SONET Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) is currently the standard for optical telecommunications and OC-192 lines are currently the fastest connections that are commonly available.   1. The OC-1 rate is 51.84 million bits per second (Mbps) so the rate of an OC192 connection is 9953.28 Mbps with 9621.504 Mbps being payload.
  2. The common version of 10 gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) is called LAN-PHY and is not compatible with OC-192 equipment although a variation of 10GbE called WAN-PHY is designed to work on OC-192 equipment. Both variants can be used on a Wide Area Network, so the names can be misleading.
  3. The most common use of OC-192 connections is for backbones of large Internet Service Providers (ISPs).
