People offer up a lot of suggestions when it comes to what tone you should use in an About page, and a lot of it can seem overwhelming and borderline contradictory. Be authoritative, but informal. Be professional, but humorous. Show off your accomplishments, but don’t brag.
The best advice I can offer when it comes to the tone you should use in your About page is this: be authentic. If you’re a funny jokester, be a funny jokester. If you’re serious and studious, it’s okay to be that too.
One thing to keep in mind, however, is that you should always remain an authority on your niche. No one is going to bother going to your blog if you don’t know what you’re talking about, so whether you are most comfortable reading like a monotone textbook or spewing off puns doesn’t matter as long as you maintain your position as a person who knows what they’re talking about.

That little added personal touch is the perfect way to make everything feel a little less impersonal for your audience, so they can truly become invested in you and your work.
They Welcome and Encourage Discussion With Their Audience
Despite the fact that it is technically called an About page, that page does not exist for you. Yes, it’s a place for you to talk about yourself. The ultimate goal, however, is to attract traffic to your site. You are selling yourself to a potential reader and the About page is your one and only pitch.
Because the reader should always be your first priority, it is important to make sure that you don’t make them feel alienated or unimportant at any time. People like to feel as if they are included, so make sure to offer them plenty of outlets to reach you.
Craig Morrison links to his Twitter, Flickr, LinkedIn, YouTube, and even has a contact page all linked within his About page, so his readers can choose what from which forum they wish to speak to him.
They Provide Proof With Testimonials and Statistics
Anyone can type a few paragraphs about why they’re great at something. I’m an awesome hula hooper. I hold the world record in sprinting. I ate 77 donuts in three minutes. I’m a math whiz. None of those things are true, but I typed them all the same. Saying something doesn’t mean that people are going to believe you, and that is an important lesson to keep in mind.
The only thing that will ultimately gain trust between you and your audience is having statistics to back up what you are saying. Instead of saying that you have many happy customers in your niche, show your audience that you do by providing them with testimonials of those happy customers.
Instead of saying that you are a genius when it comes to driving traffic to websites, show your audience how you helped a particular website increase their traffic over the span of 30 days. Get it? Show, don’t tell.
The entire top portion of Fixel’s About page is dedicated to testimonials, and readers can scroll through and look at the kind words and work that the blog has done to help others. Pretty cool.
They Tell a Story
Maybe aspiring to tell your life story is a bit ambitious for an About Me page on your blog. You don’t want to waste your time typing out 72 perfectly written, descriptive paragraphs that narrate the first year of your high school career unless it has something to do with your blog.
What you do want to do is be relatable to your audience. By sharing a relevant story with them, you are connecting on a deeper level. You are no longer just that random person who thinks they’re an authority on the situation, but a person who has been through the trenches and found a way to come out on the other side.
Regardless of what your blog niche is, try to think of a story from your past to relate to it. Neil Patel did just that in his About page, and it works out beautifully.
