Are you running a business or the business is running you?
nothing new about this question ... it just like other questions such as "live to eat or eat to live".
But I think interesting to ask. When you run a business, this means you control the business; when the business runs you, this means the business control you.
Do you agree the above and if yes, which situation will you like to be?
I would DEFINITELY want to be in control of my business. It was my idea, which I put into action, planned it, started it, and led it to where it is today.
Your business plan should spell out what you want from your business, and it's entirely up to you how you want to run it so you can achieve your goals.
I'd be interested to hear how anyone could allow their business to run them!
If so, they certainly need help in taking over the control.
I definitely control my business, however, I have to turn away or refer out a lot of smaller clients in order to do so. This way I don't spread myself to thin and it's so worth it in the long run. You need to know the value that you provide and don't be afraid to charge what you're worth.
If you run your Business pre-dominantly from your mind(&occasionally from your Heart),IF YOU PLAN, ORGANIZE,SOURCE QUALITY HUMAN RESOURCES, BUILD A GOOD TEAM &BRAND AND DEVELOP YOUR BUSINESS,THEN YOU ARE THE DRIVER.
If you predominantly run it from your heart(if it is not an NGO),Work on a day to day basis&doing Fire fighting all the time,then you are a passenger ,with no idea of where you are being taken.
It is quite a tricky question in which one should be able to distinguish their true goals in life and priorities as well. Never let your business control you as you will surely be trapped in endless attachment to be under its power. Remember, you are the one that runs your life so you should not choke yourself up with so much stress from work. Dedication in certainly important but caring for yourself is also important.
One of my Mentor's, and yes, all business owners should have one, said to me over three years ago, "...own nothing and manage everything..." so I did that, and found out that I can delegate out management. Any business no matter how big or small, as the leader of that business, you must take charge. Does that mean you do all the work, sometimes it does to get to the place where you can delegate. Bootstrapping is a good thing, you get your hands into the meat and potatoes of the development of your Company. You know if it is working or not and you continue to march through the wind, snow and rain to get to the end, and only find another hill to climb. In business, there are a lot of little hills to get to the top of the Mountain. Some of us think as we carry our flag to plant in the top of the mountain, means we have to dig the holes to plant the flag at every milestone. I do not agree with that. I do however agree that during the journey you build your team and by the time you get to the top, you and your team that helped you get there join in the revel of the success. You always want your business to work for you, yet, you have to work to get it there, as a leader. If people believe in your journey, they will join you and be what you cannot be while you lead. All great leaders in business know this Sir Richard Branson is one of the most incredible Entrepreneurs in the world. Consider reading some of his work and get some great golden nuggets on business and leadership and owning nothing and managing everything. That is when you know your businesses are working for you.
I agree, and it is sad that sometimes, with the business owner's desire to keep track on the improvement of their business makes them forget that they also have life outside the confinements of their business. There is a fine-line that separated dedication from obsession and more often than not, business owners unknowingly overstep the said boundary, and once they do that, it is quite difficult to take a step back.
