What is the best eCommerce platform to use for a startup?
Hi all, I'm looking for a little advice. What are your recommendations for a good, easy to use, eCommerce platform that is geared towards starting a new business.
I've been considering both Wordpress and opencart.
Background: My mother wants to start a clothing business, she had a small successful business some years ago but she had to close due to health issues, now she wants to do it again, my suggestion was start online first to see how it goes.
What would be the best platform to start with ?
- Simple easy to use, so my Mom can input the products and details.
- The average person should be able to use it without issues.
- Good SEO Resources
- Needs to be able to grow with us.
Any other advice is welcome
Shopify and Magento are two of the most popular and credible eCommerce platforms today. However, if you’re a business owner planning to set up your enterprise online, then chances are you’re still unsure about which platform is the right one to use for your business.
For many small businesses, Shopify is a promising eCommerce platform. It’s easy to use, has great customer service, and its monthly subscription is an all-inclusive solution. This means you don’t have to worry about the technical aspects of your website such as security and search engine optimisation. With Shopify, small business owners will have a seamless experience in managing an eCommerce website even if they don’t have enough technical knowledge to begin with.
Magento, on the other hand, is built on an open source framework that lets you have limitless control in delivering the shopping experience you want for your website. It has a large extensions marketplace that enables more features for your site and is a platform that prides on its extraordinary scalability for complex and long-term operations.
5 key factors you should take note for your online store and how Shopify and Magento will fare for each:
3) Search Engine Optimisation
5) User Experience
There are many popular eCommerce platforms like Shopify, Woocommerce, BigCommerce, Opencart, etc. which you can choose for your startups. However, choosing a dedicated eCommerce marketplace platform to start an online store is the most important. It can be a challenging task for anyone.
Ecommerce platforms like Shopify, Woocommerce, and BigCommerce require a huge investment to create a customized platform with added features as per individual business requirements.
For a startup, I would suggest a scalable solution that is less expensive & also charge one-time payment rather than a monthly basis.
As per my opinion, you can go with YoRent, an eCommerce platform that is built with all the essentials features for a startup.
Yo!Rent is a white label eCommerce software to launch an eCommerce business. With YoRent you can start your eCommerce store having features of both renting & selling, which you can enable permanently and temporarily basis as per your business needs.
The platform is developed by India's leading software development company FATbit Technologies. FATbit is a renowned name in the software development industry. They have launched more than 12 ready-mades online marketplace solutions that enable entrepreneurs to launch their business easily. The company has earned the trust of worldwide clients for their top-notch software development services, and also featured on popular platforms like Business Insider, Forbes, Inc., Telegraph, etc.

I think WordPress would be best for you as it requires no prior knowledge of coding skills. Openkart can help you if you have a bit of coding skill knowledge. WordPress is very user friendly easy to use platform. You can also try out Amazon which is a great user friendly platform to sell products.

I am always looking for low cost solutions for small business owners, so when I came across this question in the web community I decided to experiment with a business service I use and my personal blog.
PayPal allows a quick and easy way to setup product listings through their “sell on social media" offering. I added three items to the service (PayPal) and created a post in my personal blog which visitors can link to. This cost me nothing except the time to shoot the product photos, add the product information to my PayPal catalog and post the entry to my personal blog.
There are limitations. Only 50 active links through the PayPal offering, however for a startup this may be a cost effective solution.
What to do about the blogging platform? Wordpress is always a good choice, however I use Thingamablog and do all of my own customization work. I have experimented with Wordpress and there are a robust set of ecommerce offerings that can be used with the platform. I would prefer to use my own site and blog hosted on the site, however wordpress.com is good as well. Keep in mind, if using wordpress.com there may be escalating costs if being used for ecommerce purposes.
I have not checked with PayPal as an effective solution outside of the US, however I am sure there are similar services abroad that can be experimented with.
Let me know if you would like to see the new link (Shop My Sale).
I suggest considering Magento platform. In spite, it requires certain resources like time and money (for developers services), I recommend discovering more about this solution.
I’m sure that each who starts a business is planning to develop it and make it grow. Magento is exactly this platform that will cover your business needs equally well on both the initial stages and in the future. Note, that migration from one eCommerce platform to another is usually harder than just switch to a more advanced version.
Choosing Magento you will receive a great number of useful options, features, and extensions that can help you to develop and expand your startup. This platform is flexible and scalable as well as SEO and mobile-friendly. It is the solution that combines B2B and B2C functions.
If you are interested to know more about the reasons why choose Magento for your e-business check the guide that will help you to learn all the peculiarities of this great ecommerce solution.
Choice for E-Commerce solutions are endless and selection is tough, however for startup with profile of your potential entrepreneur you mentioned needs following things to be considered.
- Easy Setup & Configuration
Many e-commerce solutions promise power pack features but setting up as live store and managing day to day operation is challenging for new startup.
- Technology out of Box
Many companies can user open source options or provide custom build but being startup you want to focus on growing business and discussing features, functionally & technology
SaaS e-commerce is one the best choice where these things are available out of box.
- Low cost of operations
SaaS providers are able to provide e-commerce solutions at competitive monthly price; this low cost of operation allows business to spend on marketing & building business / brands before they invest in technology.
- Mobile Responsive & Customer Experience
Most customers are buying using mobile & tablet device, superior customer experience & working across devices is key for letting your customers complete transactions.
- Marketing Automation
Acquiring visitors via marketing channels is expensive and it takes lot of efforts to convert them to turn into paid customers. Features like abounded carts, automated e-mails to complete transactions, sending in coupons & offers and Re-marketing is key to be successful brand.
Considering these parameters obvious choice for startup is Shopify which plans starts at 29$ per month and covers most features required.
Case Study is a friend of mine called me to build a customized website for Covid Supply, since quick launch & low cost of setup was essential we setup store for him using Shopify and today he is clocking transactions and growing business without investing huge upfront.
https://buysupplies.in/ not only store is live he is able to manage store operations efficiently
While Shopify seems obvious choice right consulting is equally important to make right decisions, Budget, Growth Plan, Market Segment, Marketing Strategy and many factors affects out of this most important is Technology Partner.
If you are building Tech driven business you need robust technology partner who takes care of this for your business and help you to make right choices at right stage of your business.
For vertical business there are specialised service providers eg. For Print companies https://www.onprintshop.com/ is better choice as selling Prints online is different from selling packaged product.

Short & clear advice is to go with Shopify for most start up business.
Shopify also has Shopify Lite, which lets you add products to your site and accept payments if you already have a website. That way you don't have to rebuild your site on a separate platform.
Does anyone know if any of the other services have this capability as well?
I would say go for Shopify or BigCommerce.
Shopify: Because I own an eCommerce website on it and trust me nothing is better than this.
BigCommerce: As an alternative, if you don't want Shopify.
I was also confused at first but comparing both I choose Shopify over BigCommerce.
Platforms like Shopify and BigCommerce are good options but they are expensive as well! Let's check their basic packages:
Basic Shopify (All the basics for starting a new business): US $29 PER MONTH
Standard BigCommerce: US $29.95 PER MONTH
Don't forget that you will have to pay every month for these platforms.
I believe an eCommerce platform with a fixed cost would be a wiser choice for someone who is thinking of a startup. Well, in that case, I suggest you Yo!Kart - a complete eCommerce marketplace solution with all the must-have features for your startup. Not to mention, it has gained appreciation and recognition from top media houses like Inc., Entrepreneur, Forbes, Business Reporter, and The Telegraph.
With the help of YO!KART STARTUP PACKAGE you can build your multi-vendor eCommerce marketplace at just US $500 (one-time payment) for a year and after that, you can upgrade to any of their regular packages. The cherry on the cake is their single-vendor marketplace. Yo!Kart is going to launch their single-vendor marketplace solution soon, and that too for FREE!!!

Shopify is the easiest platform for e-commerce and everyone can develop a basic site in it without having any knowledge of coding. More>> https://www.esferasoft.com/blog/shopify-best-ecommerce-platform-to-launch-an-online-marketplace/
BigCommerce is a perfect answer for ecommerce entrepreneurs who need an online store without coding issues, incorporating plugins etc. if you can manage with the absence of free themes, then BigCommerce will be the best ecommerce platform solution.
Instead of WordPress and OpenCart, I would suggest you as I have worked for my US-based clients they mostly used Shopify. Shopify isn't open source like WordPress somewhere WordPress will be hack. Hacker will attack easily to WordPress website as it's not a fully secured Shopify is best.
No doubt WordPress is a best Option.
Going online is always a good Option.
I would suggest, try to reach other countries and other locations also with your website. Language should NOT be a problem as there are various multilingual wordpress translations available.
Visit my profile and go to website. you will find solutions . I have written exact solution for that.
Hope you like .
I would suggest WordPress + WooCommerce. It is the easiest solution out there. There are some paid ecommerce themes that you can choose - such as Flatsome which is around $60 I believe. In any case, there are tons of ecommerce themes and you can choose whichever you fancy.
Once you get the hang of WooC, you can then upgrade it to better store (not that WooC is any bad).
My choice earlier used to be the combo of WooCommerce+Wordpress when I owned a small online clothing store. But with changing times, my business needed more capabilities. That’s when I thought of building a new ecommerce platform and discovered SwiftKart. It helped me create a responsive and SEO-friendly multi vendor store at a really affordable price. My store was ready to sell in less than a week and on the side, I got some unique capabilities built and integrated. I would 100% recommend you to give this estore builder a shot.
