Do participants in the "gig economy" prefer to receive payment, digitally or with a physical check?
In a July 2008 survey, freelancers, contract workers and other people engaged in the "gig economy" said they preferred digital reimbursement for their work instead of physical checks. I was wondering if anyone in the Business.com community with freelance experience wanted to weigh in on that.
What about business owners? Do you prefer to pay digitally or have you noticed a particular trend with your freelance/contract workers?
I've been working with freelancers for several years and almost all of them prefer digital payment. Most have Square, PayPal or a similar account set up. Right now, my whole team of freelancers are paid via ACH. They love this method because it's fast - they typically get the funds within 2-3 days of our accounting team processing the payments.
For many people, it is easier to pay digitally but there are many people who use checks. Either way is fine.
Given the ubiquity, usefulness, and low cost of digital client management and payment services I prefer digital payment vs a physical check. I take advantage of auto-draft and contract based execution of funds exchange. Everything is in one place and recorded. Less paperwork and no waiting for the check to get mailed.
