For email marketing, is buying an email list preferred or is it spam and I have to build a list first?
Should I buy a list or should I build a list ?
Buying will make my list big and I will be able to start my marketing right away, while building might give me higher conversions in long term but will have to build it .
What would you prefer in terms of branding ? Will the purchased list cause my brand to be thought of as spammy?
There is only ONE answer here. NEVER buy any lists, any Facebook likes, any Twitter followers, etc etc etc.
If you do not have a relationship with the people on your list, then you are in fact spam. Same goes for lists of any kind such as Facebook or LinkedIn etc.
Invest in building relationships not trying to sell your products to "anyone".
I agree Lisa! Buying an email list is almost like having telemarketers calling your home, when your not interested in what there providing. However making your list, also give you the opportunity to reach the appropriate audience for your field of marketing. I would look at your branding as a spam, It's not direct, and a sign of desperation by approaching anyone! List building should consist of, individuals in your field, by someone or a business requesting for information.
you have put the cart before the horse.
Forget lists. Think about having the right message for your market that is not like all the other BS out there. ie: Platitudes.
Build your marketing system first. When you do this right your list will build itself. You will then be able to follow up with those on your list in the right way.
There is a saying in marketing.
Right message, the right way to the right prospect at the right time.
Have you determined who your target audience is. Local? International ? How you are going to communicate with them ? Email? Brochures ? Yellow Pages? Postcards ?
What is their price point ? What are their hot buttons?
If you can tell me that you have that stuff sussed out then no problems.
If not get in touch via my profile.
One cent opinion and here it is. Usually the marketeers who provide potential client database collect them from random search and synchronization. Some of the database details may not be up to date. For example, a client's detail such as the contact may be the same, but maybe the market preference would have changed due to moments of time. The alternate of building your own client database could require you to spend long duration of time and this will not work for a quick fix sales. On the other hand, the ready made database will only provide you 1 successful candidate out of 10 cold calls or cold emails, and most probably many of these ready made contacts will surely be offended when they dislike emails or cold calls from strangers. Building your own clients means strong bondage of customer relationship exists with further to this knowing you for over a long duration, the bridge of trusts is built where it ensures continuity of your business.
Don't purchase a list. It will definitely be regarded as spam. Start by building your own list from prospects in your database (or contacts you've previously made). The purchased list can definitely make your emails - and brand - seem like spam.
I would suggest that you do not buy a list. There are rules for sending out email blasts and spamming. Using other means of social media might be best depending on your business model, product or service.
I advise you to build the list overtime. Recipients are gaining more trust with your brand and the risk of being blocked due to spam will be avoided. List purchasing could be considered for campaign objectives once at a time if you prefer to reach a large audience. Good luck. William Kuipers Passion4Share / www.ezy-go.com & www.ezy-booking.com
Buying a list will definitely be spamming hundreds of email accounts as they do not know you.
If you create your own genuine list then that means each person that give you their details signify they actually want to do business with you.
See the difference?
Buying a list is faster but building one is more genuine. If this is the very beginning then a combination may work well.

Purchasing an email list would be considered spam in Canada, effective July 1, 2014. Even if your business is not Canadian based, it would apply to companies who are sending commercial messages into Canada. 100% do not buy a list. It's spam, its expensive, and has a horribly low ROI. create good enough content that your target audience would want to provide their contact information to them to grow long term, lead gen success.
Buying a list is not necessarily SPAM, although nearly everybody has decided to interpret the 2003 SPAM declarations to state that purchased lists are de facto SPAM.
That said, you need to know that a purchased list can still get you into trouble - and can be much more expensive than you thought.
Example: You purchase 10,000 email addresses and send them out with your normal email client/host. A very high percentage will bounce for any number of reasons. Of the remaining un-bounced leads, which are now valid email addresses, you now need to be able to ascertain which are actually interested in your product/service. If your host hasn't shut you down, you can now use any method you choose to send. But, more important is the fact that your client/host will probably shut you down. And if one of the recipients files a formal complaint, there is a high fine.
You can pay someone else to take the risk by sending the first batch, then use the unbounced leads for your campaign. If you do use this system, and brand immediately, you will probably be viewed as Spammy.
I have found buying lists create little in terms of response and there is always the question of whether or not the contacts are the right ones for you, building a list definitely takes longer but is more beneficial in terms of conversion. Maybe try doing both? And track responses.
Its not the list that will cause you spamming problems its your broadcast method.
Send a large list from your own outlook system and it will possibly get picked up as spam and this could be detrimental to any email you send out if you get on Blacklists.
Deal with a reputable broadcaster with specialist recognised software and you shouldn't have a problem. you also need to remember that it takes about 10 email hits to generate the same response as a postal campaign, and there are only about 20% of business contacts with email addresses in the UK so email data can be limited.
With regard to data, dont whatever you do is buy a cheap massive volume disc or bank of emails as 60% of them will be old, duplicated or closed addresses.
better to get a targetted list,. we work on about 18p a record for 12 months multi-use postal and email b2b data lists if that helps. Consumer data is a lot more expensive.

Think of the Pareto Principle of 80/20 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pareto_principle) and build an 'effective' list. Building will not only protect your brand, but will allow for you to interact with your customers as you go helping your company evolve to meet their needs and desires.
This is the most wasteful of business revenue that I can think of but some may swear by it. You purchase a list of name and email addresses but only turn people off from your brand because much of it will go to their spam folder and many will immediate delete because of fear of causing a crash of their computers. It is not as hard as some make it out to be to build your own list, at least this way they will be in your address book and will hit their inboxes and not go immediately into the trash.
You should build a quality list. Sometimes you can buy a select list and you have to check before if it is worth the money. Mostly I have seen the list is useless and conversions are impossible.
It will be spam. You are sending emails to people that have not asked to receive your emails, they don't know you and easily, ignore and delete your emails. Try to ave your own list. even if you don't have so many subscribers, at least they are interested to receive your emails and will read them.
