How can I tell where my web traffic is coming from?
I have a simple 2-year old 3 page website for my antique shop that displays our contact information, an about us page, and photo gallery. Google analytics was set up for me by the web developer, but I never looked at it till recently. Traffic has been steadily increasing to the site. How can I tell where the web traffic is coming from?
Not only check "Referrals" under Google Analytics - see what your bounce rate is - if it is high, people are leaving your site fast!
As you soon as you sign into your Google Analytics dashboard, click the 'Reporting' tab and scroll down the page. Your traffic report will be categorized into 3 categories.
1. Geographic - Language, Country or City
2. System - Browser, Operating System & Service Provider
3. Devices
i am also using crazyegg for my website which is an amazing tool, i recommend it
Thanks.

3. Devices
Click on Country or City to find out where they are coming from.
On the left side of your page, you will see a Menu of tabs. Click on 'Acquisition'. Click on 'All Traffic' and a subtab will open. Choose 'Referrals'.
This will list the 3rd party websites (if any) where your traffic has been referred from.
For the record, Ali Zartash-Lloyd provided a good illustration above. Good luck!
Good call. You know what they say about “Assume”! I made the assumption Eolo was asking about traffic source vs Geo & Device information and you are right to check out the assumption. To clarify, Generous App answer shows how to find out “Geographical Source”, “Device Type” & “Device Environment” (OS, Browser, etc) of the traffic and my response shows you “What Generates” your traffic. I hope between the 2 of us we have covered both angles and overcome any linguistic confusion.

Hi Eolo
Go to your Google Analytics account and click on
Acquisition > All Traffic
You then have option of Channels + Source/Medium + Referral
- Channels tells you the overview of Direct, Organic Search, Referral and Social. You can click on each of these to get more information
- Referrals shows you traffic from Backlinks to your website
Within Acquisition you also have other options such as:
- AdWords – Pay per click analysis
- Search Engine Optimisation – You need to have linked your WebMaster account for this which gives you keywords, etc. that generate your traffic.
- Social – Telling which social media brings traffic, etc.
- Campaigns – This is for advance users that will track campaigns, etc. you set up.
Just a word of warning. Google does not give you the full picture. Due to the Privacy Policy and their move towards “Paid” analytics you will not get the full information. You see a lot of “Not Set” when you check the Keyword reports so please do not assume Google gives you a full picture. It is directionally correct but the numbers are well below what you really get.
For accurate information you need Server Stats. Check with your hosting company if they provide Server Stats if not check this http://www.cognisant-hosting.com/hosting/website_statistics.html
Hope this helps.

Tip: Always include a tracking url in your advertising or postings on social media.
Login to Google Analytics and look for Acquistion -> Overview, this shows methods. Clicking on each method will show the source
