How do I convince my clients that advertising with social media tools is valuable?
Just started a start up on social media advertising and am finding it difficult to convince my clients why social media is a good platform to create awareness about their brand. Do you have any particular methods that are effective?
show them evidence as to why. Documentation is better than conversation.

Get them to respond to your advertising and show how that proves the concept.
Social media should be just one piece of the marketing mix pie when it comes to building a brand. Usually you see "Like us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter" in most ads and the widgets are available for websites.
If your client is a relevant business to begin advertising for Likes on Facebook, there is great opportunity to advertise very efficiently to a large target market. Have a client test their advertising by providing some call to action offer or they can actually inbox their fan base an offer that can be tracked as well.
With everyone having a Smartphone, social media is the virtual networking space of the now and growing into the future.
Here are some stats that may help

Growing a business by educating a market is a marathon not a sprint. You want to reinforce your position as an authority on every social media advertising so people know who you are and why you exist. Start with articles (original or curated) and share with prospects. When you get customers share testimonials and statistics. They are proof that what you're selling works. There is no easy way to "convince" a prospect that what you offer is something they need. It's a lot easier for them to come to you. In order to do that, you need to be known as an expert and an authority in this area. Making sure your content is targeted to the solutions you offer, frequent so prospects know you're there, consistent in tone and message, and intentional driving the prospect down a clear logic path to you, will be critical to marketing your business successfully. To your Sweet success!
You have got excellent advice from all posts above. Use statistics, choose customers whose profile fit with the use of social media, show the customers how they are lagging behind their own competitors in using social media and it would be great if you can show the value of business which those competitors grabbed through this medium. Also, show how all companies have integrated social media into their marketing or media mix. It's not a luxury anymore, let them feel the guilt of not attending to the future of the business if they don't use it "now".
You can do the above through a structured approach which helps in focusing your actions and message in every phase of the process and to for format the brain of the customer positively, to position yourself as bringing a solution to his needs and not just selling a service: 1) understand customer needs 2) confirm his needs 3)convert your proposition into a solution to his needs specifically 4) present the "commercial" proposition 5)show financial benefits of your proposition 6) handle objections 7) close the deal.
Hope this helps.
You can tell them that this is additional revenue stream, at lesser the operating effort / cost. You can also show that this is a strong way to engage with clients by showing successful companies who make efforts to incorporate social media in their strategies.
If you explain how Information Technology has reached to every individuals hand and it is more handy than other mediums, such as Electronic, Print and Street Display.. Now, the Laptop and Mobile have replace the structured offices and Professional and Social interaction has compacted with the IT..
If you explain the audience and reach-out related comparison with other medium, you will be able to convince your clients..
All the best.
It is essential that you demonstrate success in the discipline you are promoting. Put yourself in the prospect’s position, they have very likely been bombarded with unsupported claims of the effectiveness of various social media platforms for years. Genuine Social Media Marketing expertise is a vary rare commodity, although there are thousands of enterprises claiming to have the answer to all the SM questions. Providing examples of other peoples work or results actually identifies the fact that you have no evidence of your own capabilities (this is usually the first sign of incompetence). Industry statistics can be useful in supporting your assertions, but have very little practical value when trying to justify the reasons they should hire you. People who repeatedly quote penetration rates and subscription statistics are evidentially missing the point, and possibly any direct understanding of their prospects business plan.
So, use actual examples (with testimonials) apply statistics only to quantify your customers’ results not to scope some virtual market or the effectiveness of your competition. Without proof of your clients’ advertising effectiveness no one (in their right mind) would consider buying social media advertising from you.
The start up needs to develop a community first before social media advertising is effective. The right social media platforms have to be chosen for their target customers, depending on if they are B2B or B2C. If you have examples of similar clients that have used these tools effectively, you could use these case studies to engage your client in the effectiveness of social media. As you know it's all about content, so building awareness about their brand is all about how the "brand" solves problems for their customers. Content is king before advertising.

Here's a recent article with some data showing that paid social ads convert more customers ...however, it's different for different clients, B2C vs B2B and different platforms .., start with a modest budget and experiment and measure ...for article see : http://www.emarketer.com/Article/Paid-Social-Ads-Convert-More-Customers/1011188/9
You can create an infograph of the positive effect and mileage of social media on brand advertisement. It is the best way of doing global advertisement with a long mileage. Also do make sure your infographics align with the company's target reach, mission and vision of where they want to get to. Graphically show them where they are presently and where they can be with the usage of social media in a short while.
1) The premise of having to "convince" a client of something puts you in a tough place to begin with. On occasion I am faced with a skeptical client, and the only response is that they have entrusted me to help guide them through a process, and I am offering my professional advice. It may sound harsh, but it puts you in a position of strength in dealing with them.
2) Many business owners have a misperception of the value and effectiveness of social media, because so many of their peers are doing it wrong. They hear stuff like "I've invested months getting Facebook fans and it hasn't paid off" or "How can you possibly get people to buy stuff from you in 140 characters?" A quick education about the shortcomings of most business's social media efforts as compared to industry best practices (list building through contests or posts designed to spark engagement or inclusion of calls to action) can be effective in getting them on board.
The best way in my opinion is always, show and tell and any successful case study you have and can communicate to your clients.
Statistics are great, but any success story, being the basis for great statistics will convince clients more than the stats themselves.
And as mentioned in various responses, add the cost/benefit analysis if it adds to your story.
