Just started a start up on social media advertising and am finding it difficult to convince my clients why social media is a good platform to create awareness about their brand. Do you have any particular methods that are effective?

Use statistics, choose customers whose profile fit with the use of social media, show the customers how they are lagging behind their own competitors in using social media and it would be great if you can show the value of business which those competitors grabbed through this medium. Also, show how all companies have integrated social media into their marketing or media mix. It's not a luxury anymore, let them feel the guilt of not attending to the future of the business if they don't use it "now".
You can do the above through a structured approach which helps in focusing your actions and message in every phase of the process and to for format the brain of the customer positively, to position yourself as bringing a solution to his needs and not just selling a service: 1) understand customer needs 2) confirm his needs 3)convert your proposition into a solution to his needs specifically 4) present the "commercial" proposition 5)show financial benefits of your proposition 6) handle objections 7) close the deal.
