How do I stand out on Twitter?
There are so many Tweets posted every day and my tweets get buried really quickly. With that being said, I don't want to post 100x a day and annoy people. What is the best strategy with using Twitter to maximize the amount of exposure I get?
Yes hashtags make your tweets searchable so you should always use them as long as they're relevant to the post. Making your tweets interesting, controversial and/or funny and people retweet them. Retweeting gets you a more engaged viewer because it's a post from one of their contacts rather than a business

Agreed - hashtags are a must. Do some research looking at the types of hashtags being used to talk about your content (what are your competitors using, search a few keywords and look at any associated hashtags, etc).
Also try targeting a few "champions" to engage with - share interesting tidbits of your content relevant to their audience, retweet their content that's relevant to your audience. This can help start to build a reliable advocate network for you on Twitter and will start to build/reinforce your credibility as an expert on this stuff!
Last - if you have really strong pieces of content that you've tweeted but didn't quite the reaction you wanted, don't be afraid to RT it on a different day (good to give it a few weeks so your feed isn't all repeated tweets) at a different time. Start to understand when your audience is on Twitter looking for content like yours. Tools like Twitalyzer are a good place to start.
Wow, that's a vague question for such a large social media platform. You will most likely get a bazillion answers and most of them will be correct. lol
Is your objective to just build "exposure", or to build meaningful business relationships? Because those can be 2 different things (just like in the offline world). Don't worry about the volume of tweets, focus on what you're saying and why. Go to local "tweet-ups" in your area. Follow people/companies in your target audience. And as Dave mentioned, hashtags are very valuable as well. Try to have at least one in every tweet.

There have been other Qs on here about getting a lot of Twitter followers, and while I know that's not what you're asking, my first question to you is, WHY do you want to stand out? To build business, make new cyber friends, get the word out about a groundbreaking health product, etc? Once you determine your "why", you can look for Tweeple in your niche to connect with, which will help you stand out as you'll be Tweeting content relevant to their interests and needs, which may make them more likely to visit your page/website.
Next, as the others advise: Tweet really good content, and not always about yourself/your biz. Throw in some strategic (and tasteful) humor periodically, too.
Focus on others. Follow Friday seems to be not as popular as it was but is still a good way to recognize others. The hashtag #FF can also be adapted, such as #FollowNow, #FollowMonday. Or just make up something and use it to acknowledge others, e.g.: #FabTweeps then list their handles with the @ of course.
Try to thank people for Retweeting and Favoriting your Tweets as often as you can. (These will appear under Notifications). Everybody loves to see their handle pop up :-)
Finally, while having a lot of followers means you'll reach more people, the numbers themselves can be deceiving if you're being followed by bots or inactive accounts, or spammers. So aim to build your reach slowly, with all the council given in these responses, and you'll be on your way to becoming a stand out!
Hi Caitlin! Agree with Dave and Finley re: hashtags and catchy content, but I have to add that - since social media is about community and relationship - work on those.
1. Spend some time listening and sharing/retweeting: as in real-life relationships, misuse of social media means everyone's talking but no one's listening. Everyone's having the problem you have (not standing out). Find a few people who tweet your topic, share their content when it's relevant and, very often, they'll reciprocate.
2. Real people are your advocates: chances are, some if your friends and colleagues are on Twitter. Follow step 1 with them, if their content is relevant, and ask them to share with their friends! People trust people they know above all else, online. Your friends' friends will take their advice.
3. As Dave said, content matters, but so does time of day: Twitter success comes from putting in the legwork. What's your strategy (core message, audience, tactics)? Do you post spontaneously, or is their a method to the madness? If you post promotions on Monday mornings, most ppl will ignore you. However, how is your (specific) audience feeling on Thursday afternoon?
4. Promote less: 30% max is my recommendation. Twitter is about info, inspiration and a laugh, so deliver on those needs with great content 70-85% of the time - be human - and you'll start seeing a difference.

Don't do what everyone else is doing. Picture and videos get the most attention, but make sure they are original. Take pictures and videos of your life or work. Make sure they are interesting and that your followers would like them and than share.
Secondly, instead of blasting something out to a ton of people; talk to people individually. Social media is about being social and that means you can ask questions and comment directly too people using the @. This has the highest response of anything and will make people love you and share you stuff more.
Hashtags won't change much, it makes things noticeable and searchable, but won't make you stand out much more. Sharing interesting pictures and videos as well as tweeting directly too people have the best results by far. Good luck and if you have any more questions feel free to ask.
Hi Caitlin - the best way to stand out is ask a relevant engaging question with a striking graphic - Twitter though fast paced is incredibly receptive to images, graphics, really anything shiny. People automatically look and think "OH LOOK"
I recommend taking a look at the following free services to make a number of simple graphics that take minutes.
If you combine a solid graphic, with an engaging post and schedule or time yourself at a peak hour for your audience you'll stand out like a sore thumb :)
Hashtags work great too but if you really want to stand out the Psychology of color is an incredibly powerful asset to keep in mind when creating graphics, you always want to capture people by instinct, make them look at you without having to wave your arms up in air saying "Hey I'm over here!"

There are several tricks purported to work. Now, you need to understand Twitter user behavior. First of all, most people check Twitter periodically, and only scroll so far through their feeds. The most recent tweets will get their attention. Thus, the likelihood that your posting even 20-30 times a day will annoy people is small. But if you really want to get attention, interact with other people's tweets at least as much as you tweet your own original content. Hashtags are great. When appropriate, use the trending hashtags (but only do it where it feels natural to you). Think about who you want to interact with you and what value you can provide to them, then provide it.
Position yourself as a leader in your industry. Share valuable information that others want to read and share. If its engaging people will stay connecting and engage. Sorry no quick fixes here, It takes time to earn followers loyalty and engage them if only they see the value. highlights: Write content that is, interesting, engaging and worth sharing and you'll see in time you get that nice base and more followers headed your way.

2. Don't just tweet into the ether, reply to others, retweet others and engage with people. This will get you interaction and engaged followers better than hoping people will see your tweets.

This is something that so many struggle with!
I think the key thing that people miss is creating content that is relevant and interesting to your target market and mission. So, naturally we need to first define your target market. Are they male or female? Are they 20 or 40? What is the mission of this tweet (yes, it can change with each tweet!). Is it to get people to sign up for something? Is it to provide someone with information? Creating content that is specific to your market and mission will help both following but will more importantly help engagement with your brand.

I think the first question you need to ask yourself is what kind of exposure you are looking for. If you are seeking retweets by individuals that are reputable within their fields then post interesting information about their field or about them. People love to see their name in lights, er twitter feeds. This could be an article, or blog you discovered or some interesting insight that YOU have about something they said. Tag them in the post directly, or use an appropriate hashtag. I would try to mix it up between the use of visuals, and reshares. By providing your audience with valuable content that they are interested in and not just a 'marketing pitch' you will grow your readers and re-tweeters. Best way from my experience is to focus on others not yourself. Read before sharing, learn what your audience is interested in, what would help them do what they do better, what they're after information wise, what they're interests are and deliver what they want when they want it vs what you want and when you want it. Meaning, if your audience is Mom's let's say and you learn that Moms like to talk about newborn allergies to milk more than any other subject yet you have diapers to sell, what you focus on is building your relationship with them by offering them more information about allergies not diapers.
People will show interest in you and what you have to offer, when they feel you genuinely are interested in them and what they need. Provide information, solutions, suggestions, ideas to save them time, get the right information, whatever it is that they value the most.
When you focus on building friendships and relationships, your content will naturally shine through the clutter because the emotional relationship will trump the rest. You are better off having 100 people you know well than 10k who don't know you at all as quantity does not mean conversion.
If your content gets buried, it means it does not stand out enough. Do you know exactly when your audience is the most active on twitter? what they're life styles are? perhaps your relationship can start on Linkedin first then move to twitter as some only exchange tweets with those they know well...
Highlight others on your tweets, talk about THEM and what matter to them not YOU and they will pay attention. Your focus should be on them voluntarily opting into your twitter account as there's intent and interest which means perhaps your focus should be on creating content and a buzzing site off of twitter first if one doesn't exist.
We are very vain creature and in this crazy reality of ours because there's so much noise, sometimes a whisper with a soul and a little heart goes a long way.

Two to three posts/tweet a day spaced evenly would be good. Once every four hours. Use 2 or three hashtags. Retweeting related posts to yours or favorite tweets would be good too. Of course you must have a strong base of followers to begin with, the more followers you have the better off you will be with your tweets. Engaging with your followers is even better, this will make you an ally or someone who really cares about others' tweets. Always say thank you when one of your tweets get retweeted. A thank you goes a long way, believe me.
By engaging your followers, I mean make your tweets interesting and catchy enough that they would react and share their opinions. Post memes once in a while as this would be humorous and mind boggling. Good luck and have fun with your tweets.
