I have recently started a blog. While I am working on ways to get readers in, I am curious as to why people just read and leave. How to make the "subscribe by email" feature attractive?

Great advice. Is your blog affiliated with your website? Remember SEO takes awhile.
For me I don't really care if people comment on my blogs. If they are finding my business through the blog via search and then emailing me with questions, awesome. That's what I want. Plus I use it for expert positioning and spread across all of my social platforms and industry blogs.
The one thing I didn't see mentioned here on my skim through is the value of following other blogs and commenting on content. If your audience is there, so should you.
Work on your Content and later spread it on Social platforms. At start you must focus on social media marketing of your blog.
Among the answers for this question, the bottomline and common end would be the importance of finding ways to engage your readers which is not an easy ting to do. It is not a game you can carelessly play. What you need is to learn the factors that will boost the traffic your blog needs so it can have enough online exposure which then leads to more possible readers. Why not also try having marketing videos that can add the interesting factor for your blog. Having compelling and creative videos such as animated ones can be a good thing to add and try.
The best way to motivate readers to subscribe to your blog is to provide helpful information - information the readers can actually use. You might create a 'by email' optin box above the actual 'input email address' box. The optin you create can tell of the benefits of subscribing.
But, the better question is to ask how to get readers to subscribe to your mailing list. That's with a free gift that's perceived to have great value by the reader; offer great content on a regular basis; and have a great opt-in box. I use Get Response and they have great opt-in (web form) templates that you can make your own.
Place it in a prominent place on your blog page as well as below each post and encourage people to sign up if they like what they see in your posts. Also consider using an RSS feed for following as some readers may not like to give out an email address but will follow via RSS. Good Luck! Also leave your readers with a questions sometimes these is no reason to comment if you don't ask for their opinion.
You have to promote your blog, becuase it has to be searchable. Who is your target audience? Where such people usually spent time? What kind of websites do they like to visit? What kind of social media do they prefer?
Would like to share some of my learning; hopefully you find it useful:
1. Your initial focus should be understanding who your real audience is.
2. Once you identify your reader profile, next step is reach out to them and communicate value of subscribing
3. Keep working with your style and content; some blogs would be hits- some would not resonate with your readers. Keep writing till you get your style and content right
4. Be patient to figure our who is your real audience
5. Be original- do not try to be somebody else
6. Use appropriate visuals, images and info-graphics in your blog
7. Have wider reach- link your blog to social media like FB, LinkedIn, Tweeter etc.
8. Provide a nice free gift to the subscriber- video, audio or e-book
9. Work on 'Leave your comments' space- if a reader leaves his/her comment, revert and engage through relevant interaction
- I saw other great suggestions as well. I am sure most of them would work for you.
All the best; may your blog rock!
In reading most of the comments I find them very much right on and could only add that you need to consider what your goal is. what your blog is about and how you are promoting it. Learn to write well and have a call to action at the end with a good question. Stay focused on your reason for the blog and find good content for your readers. Think about the real purpose of your "WHY" AND what you are about. What or you offering. Service? Training? Sell product? Building email list?
It is easy to get overwhelmed with all the free stuff and offers out there and you can get lost in reading comments on social media.
SO like myself, it is time to tighten the reins and follow a narrow path with more focus on the Goal and expertise.
Is the helpful?
Place the subscription form in the right place; sometimes you can pop it up at the end of post.
Most importantly, you should be good at what you do - write for your readers, not necessarily for search engines.
Do the best job!
