How do I set up an organizational structure for a 5 year old business?
I started a Hostel/PG (Paying Guest) business 4 years back. I now have 5 PGs. I have several staff members in management roles who look after customer satisfaction, bed selling, maintenance, etc... How should I manage them or what kind of organizational structure should I put into play? I don't have job descriptions for all of the staff and everyone is doing a little bit of everything. Sometimes there are responsibility overlap issues that come up.
Structure or clarity is a vitally important step in business success. With documented clarity, no balls get dropped, and everyone always knows what to do.
Don’t get hung up on the now; design your chart for what you would like to have in an ideal world. As an example, if you would like to have a supervisor, and you are currently doing that job, write your name in that position and title it “Acting As Supervisor.”
There are all kinds of organizational software programs available, like OrgPlus or LucidChart, but I find that mind mapping software can do the job just fine. Plus it can help you collect and organize your thoughts in business and your personal life. I’m a fan of Mindjet Mind Manager, although there are quite a few variations out there.
