Start with being in the US. I get phone calls all the time from foreign companies. I only deal with US based companies. Align yourself with a US company, network with them, work with them.
Build out your Social Media, for SEO focus on Linkedin and twitter since you're target audience is small business owners. You can expand your social media via your current client base and testimonials, and if you know how, you can expand quickly and be talking to many new potential clients within the first 30 days.
The more digital channels and business directories you can enlist your business with, the better, driving SEO in desired geographical regions i.e.. USA region by product/service category. Our platform drives this for businesses, brands, and consumers.
Build your voice and messaging around how you're different, what you do that 'traditional' seo firms do not do, and work to distinguish yourself from all of the garbage out there on the market. Most of all, show them how you're going to get them conversions, not rank. US clients are looking for profits, not rankings. Driving keywords to relevance might look good on a monthly report but it doesn't produce ROI unless your clients are closing business because of your efforts. SEO firms are in trouble because too many have been cheating their clients and search engines for too long. Specialize in bottom results and help your clients understand that its a lot more complex than just rankings.
Have you weight in the US versus European clients?
For e.g., if you've done SEO for Startups in the US, then the Startup market would definitely be open to your services, no matter how many clients you had in Europe.
If your European clients are small companies and your US clients are big brands, then having 1-2-3 big brands in a portfolio is definitely a huge plus in comparison to having 100 small ones.
Another thing: if you want to expand in the US, try local first. Engage with local/regional communities (tech, bloggers, entrepreneurs), look for meetup gatherings, freelancer meetings and so on.
I've worked with many international clients (I'm Romanian and never worked with Romanian clients, I know it sounds funny). None of my clients cared if I had clients from the US, the UK or AU, as long as the quality of my company's services were top notch. :)
There are way too many SEO companies out there and most of them offer almost same things, what lacks is customer service and reporting mechanism.
Most of the agencies are not even transparent about how they operate and what kind of methods they use.
If you can look into these points and have some sort of USP around it, it may help.
Hi John, I interview many USA celebrities for Muzicheadz.com and write for one USA based mag, but if I can help cross promote your business let me know, maybe lets set up a interview too for you? yell out here to help network.
Just reading through your comments and your USP.. People are becoming more educated (especially in the U.S.) and would run a mile when someone says they can guarantee rankings.. Unless you know the algorithm, there is no way you can guarantee anything.. I would see this as deceptive, and the range of PR out there notifying people of just that fact should make you think of a different USP.
But to answer your question, have you tried expanding into doing paid search for your company to test which cities respond best to your company offerings, and tailoring landing pages to those cities.
Where are you located? If you are located outside the US, why should someone choose someone overseas as opposed to within their own country? What do a you offer that someone in the United States can't?
Put yourself in your target markets shoes.. why would I choose someone overseas/interstate, when I can choose a company local to me where I can drop by whenever I feel the need to?
Do a little market research and develop a list of the biggest web design firms in the largest US cities. Pitch them on a strategic partnership and let each know you will be offering their competitors the opportunity to team up if they don't . They design and you optimize. Create some buzz with press release about major European SEO company teaming with the most sought after Web Design company in [fill in the city]. Add a challenge contest where businesses buried deep in the SERPs can enter the chance to win a full SEO makeover. Pick the one you can get ranked the fastest as the winner and then come back with another press release about the winner and the success story and testimonial from the happy business owner.
Highlight your guarantee and make it even more magnetic and outrageous by offering a double your money back guarantee. And place that beside your portfolio of success stories from previous clients on a web page linked from the press release.
Then rinse and repeat in each major city.
John, your absolute guarantee or money back is your value proposition, so your whole plan to go into the US should be based on that. Since you are an SEO Company you should have no problem with using these keywords on your home page and within your services pages to get your Company on the first page of Google. Good luck with your entry into the US market.
When entering a market, which I would say has its unique challenges and costs, you need to look at creating a plan. What makes you stand out from competitors that are in the U.S. market? How can you offer something different? Are you worth working with? All the other questions about competing in a new location.
How is another question. Once you have your unique proposition you can see if there are any niches you can work in. Generally, anything you use now you can can extend. LinkedIn, Youtube, Social Media, traditional media ads, recommendations & referrals, blogging, mobile marketing, and so on. Just optimize a specific target market. I would say you should target specific cities or states in the U.S. as well.
