If you develop software, what project management SaaS or other has worked best for you and the team?
I've used JIRA and VERSIONONE, I've got a new team developing some cloudware and we're looking at alternatives. Please respond with what you've used (JIRA and VERSIONONE experiences are appreciated). What's the +/- in your experience?

I used Jira, Salesforce, MS Project, access, Excel and others.
For tracking, a CRM/SRM software with task management is good for issue tracking.
For a communications package that creates alerts from one task to task within a project plan, look at lotus notes or BPM software (Business Process Management software) which handles manual and automated processes.
We use Jira and Confluence for years. Prior that we use Source Forge. For me the most important in the software project are the people, not the tools
I would say it depends on the size of your team, I been using JIRA, MS Project, DotProject in the past. In my current job, we decide to go for a different approach using more of a task management tool from asana.com. We use it for software development, support tickets and idea capturing. It has worked out well, we still a small team of 20 people, so not sure how well it scales to larger teams.
None of the PM software will do everything well. I've used JIRA for issue tracking and it worked fine. But we used MS Project for things like tracking staff assignments. Versionone is a more complete project management system focused on Agile, if that is how you are managing your project. In my experience the key is making sure the team uses the tools they way you need them to and being willing to fill in gaps in the tool functionality. For example, you may need to track project budget using a spreadsheet if the PM tool doesn't do that.
Clarizen is by far superior as a collaborative platform. It also supports all the MS-project features.
No free, but you get your money's worth
We are using Comidor. It's an online business collaboration suite based on cloud technology that offers a lot of tools regarding Collaboration, CRM and Finance, but the one we are using the most is the Project Management package. It's easy to use and learn, fully customizable and has extremely useful Business Intelligence tools! What I could say as a disadvantage is that it hasn't got a breathtaking design, it's a bit flat, but as for the functionality I couldn't blame it for something. I used ProjectPlace few years ago, but I used more often a web-based solution that isn't originally a Saas, but an OpenSource on LAMP, DotProject.
While the former was mainly within a PMO environment (tracking projects, activities, deadlines), the latter was on IT projects, software development, lead management, and managing organizational/business development projects (including start-ups)- it contains various team-work features that are sorely missing in other project management tools
features that I used to replicate what I had developed as a process within LotusNotes workgroup in early 1990s for a large customer were I was tasked with a programme to develop and deliver a software development methodology and the associated organizational and cultural changes

I have tried a range but keep coming back to Jira. It is not an exact fit to my methodology - which is a combination of Agile (SCRUM) and lean with some elements of traditional project management - but it the best fit.
1) Take a look at Clarizen - they have various SaaS PM solutions for different industries/roles/company sizes. They also integrate with other SaaS vendor solutions like CRM/social media etc. Just another option to look into. We work with a world class Accounting & Financial Reporting SaaS solution that interfaces with Clarizen, Salesforce and many other SaaS solutions.
2) Another one to check into is ForwardMetrics.com - I believe they might have a PM SaaS solution - but I am not 100% sure.
You may also want to consider the Atlassian tools:
1) Jira - for general project management tasks and workflow
2) Jira Agile - for backlogs and sprint planning
3) Confluence - documentation in a Wiki interface

We have used Redmine and Basecamp in the past. Although they are both great PM platforms, neither really gave us what we needed.
Redmine is nice in that it is open source, therefore fully configurable. It is also great for issue tracking.
Basecamp is simple and our project managers like to use it for client facing PM.
We have moved onto JIRA Agile. We prefer the use of the Agile and Scrum functionality that JA provides. It provides a great visual snapshot of where the project is at the moment.
Redmine is opensource, although it requires ruby installation which doesn't fit well in some existing environments depending on the ruby experience of your IT resources. After the installation is completed I'd say the time invested would be well worth it, it's a pretty solid solution witha semi stable community maintaining the codebase.
