Is mobile shopping more effective than e-commerce sites on PC?
Is it a global trend that mobile commerce is more effective than e-commerce on PC? It seems to me that shopping is no longer something people go and do anymore; it’s something they are always doing.
An interesting thing about mobile commerce is the customer brings the electronic device wherever they go. New things like Bluetooth beacons ( Apple's ibeacon being one ) bridge the divide between brick-and-mortar and true electronic commerce. There's a lot of possibilities there unique to mobile.
App driven depending on the outlet. PC driven depending on the brand.
In 2012, people spent $25 billion on purchases made from phones and tablets, an increase of 81 percent from 2011.
It is expected that mobile purchases will increase to $89 billion per year by 2016. This prediction was before Apple Pay and other payment methods that are making it cheaper and easier for both consumers and sellers, as such, the expectation is $100 billion in actuality.
Shopping online on your phone or tablet is personal preference. With sites adding responsiveness to their designs and/or mobile versions of their websites it is getting easier to transact on devices that aren't desktops or laptops yes but that doesn't make it more effective.
I get the sense you're asking should you sell via mobile or via a website. The answer is they're the same thing. You just have a responsive template that works on all devices thus catering to the personal preference of your customer.
Some larger stores have created their own Apps for users to download and use to shop with them directly. However an App is not necessarily in most cases where a mobile theme/template/design will work just as well if not better.
Hi Niladri,
With the advent of smartphone, mobile websites and app will surpass the desktop purchases from online websites in near future. What an eCommerce website has to do be ready to react in the fingertips of the users. That’s what they are doing through mobile apps. These apps need to be very quick. If they allow their users to think too much, they can hit a sale from him. So always make sure that the mobile apps should be faster than the competitors.
Well, @Niladri I guess I have just the right post over our blog which may help you in deciding why mobile shopping has become more effective than e-commerce site. I have pasted link at the bottom do have a look at it but if you don't have time then I can explain in a single line
"On Black Friday last year, sales made through smartphones using the mobile apps was estimated more than 20% of the US e-commerce spending. Traffic from mobile phones to e-commerce stores was even bigger, estimating almost 40% of total online visits on that particular day."
What this means? It means that more and more people are shopping using their Smartphone and tablet devices. It has become easier for them to go online and purchase all their daily stuffs online. In the mean time, mobile commerce, which is in fact the mobile edition of e-Commerce, has also turned out to be an important way for retailers that are driving huge sales through dedicated mobile apps.

Well @Niladri I am glad that our post has helped you in giving you some good insights, let me know if you encounter any questions.
Ecommerce shopping has only really gone mainstream for the past few years. It may be nearing the top of the bell curve but it is certainly still the primary form of online shopping. Mobile with rise quicker than PC based commerce as the number of smart smart phone users get up to speed on how to use their mobile devices effectively. Security is still an issue and more so for smart phones.
Dear Niladri mobile business at the moment best business around the world, it dominate all over the world, there is no match between mobile business and e-commerce site so without wasting any time choose mobile business and success hit your door within no time
Hey Niladri,
Mobile is starting to overtake desktop in terms of e-commerce, with many authoritative sites indicating in their estimates and research that by the end of the year mobile will have more than half of global e-commerce spend. So yes, trend-wise, mobile is shaping up to be the future of e-commerce. A few key points contribute to this:
- Current mobile device penetration rates continue to soar
- The developed world contributes greatly to the numbers but the developing world is catching up especially with a lot of startups focusing on e-commerce and targeting mobile
- The offline-ti-online (O2O) and uber-futuristic Internet of things (IoT) trends is looking more and more realistic given new technologies that are currently evolving, including near field communication (NFC)
All of this creates a stunning picture for mobile: not only is it easier and more convenient to shop using a device that's always on you, you can access a world of integration from that same device -- from coupons to in-store deals to actually using that device to scan QR codes, use NFC to glean more information on an actual product and even use the same technology to pay for it.
Mobile is more effective than desktop because of all these reasons, globally.
I would think that mobile shopping is becoming more and more popular. Is it more effective? I wouldn't say that necessarily. i am sure that most deals you can find on a mobile device, you could find on e-commerce. Obviously mobile is the direction of the future and in time will definitely take over the majority of shopping. However, shopping is still popular and booming. I don't see actual physical shopping or e-commerce going anywhere anytime soon.
@rapidsoft the article is brilliant and gave lots of insights how the retail industry can be governed by m-commerce...thanks
