Is starting a houseboat a viable business model in Indian tourism Industry?
I'm from Goa, India and was thinking of starting a houseboat business here. I know there are successful houseboat business models in Kerala and Kashimir, but will it work in Goa? Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of this?
I'm seeking a reply from professionals in Indian tourism Industry.
The crux of any tourism business lies in the natural peculiarity of that area and how effective you're utilising marketing opportunities of the same.
Houseboat business is successful in Alleppey Kerala because of its climatic conditions as well. Even though Kerala is blessed with a lot of backwaters, the Alleppey Houseboats business only flourishes because of its ideal geographical conditions - as it not only has ideal backwaters for this sort of a business, but also it's less windy as well. Other backwaters in Kerala also has established this business model but eventually failed due to the climatic conditions. A classic example is the nearby Kumarakom, where the business failed due to high wind and also due to the existence of water moss.
So the fact you have to consider is that Goa being fully costal, there could be a huge threat of wind. Also there should be ideal backwaters, so it makes the operations smooth and safe. In short, the business model would only sustain if you're able to find a right location which suits this. I would recommend to study about this in detail by visiting existing operators in Kerala and also to engage any good market research agency to do a feasibility study.
