My friend and I are planning to spend a year on a motorcycle traveling throughout the world. Do you think I could get sponsors?
We would like to find sponsors on cellphones, equipment and motorcycles to do a road trip throughout the whole world. We would film, blog and publicize everything. So what would be the best way to find sponsors?
I saw a gentlemen came to my school to spread the spirit of coward, determination, strengths, and positive thinking 20 years back. Cannot recalled his name, but I remembered that he was a handicap with one leg, rode a Harley-Davidson bike with a mission to ride the bike to travel around the world to spread that spirit. He started at USA and I was in Singapore than, probably half-way through the whole journey. He was will supported by churches, respective authorities, and other non-profit organizations.
From the above, I believe we have a case for your plan:
1. It is good to have a cause or mission very simple to understand
2. You need sponsors to believe your cause/ mission - if you try on commercial approach - please look for TV/ Movie market; if you try to non-commercial approach, churches may be a good option.
As for other sponsor, you should group you whole journey into:
1. Cause - already mentioned above
2. Road map - targeted places + planned activities - so that can understand which sponsor to be more appropriate.
3. Plan the countries - so that you can reach out to the Tourism Board of the respective countries + specific organisations that may react to your cause.
Note: you should draft your idea complete and exciting before you seek Sponsors. Sponsors will be interested only if your act fit their needs
Julian: What brand and type of motorcycles will yo be riding? What countries will you be visiting? Where will you be starting out from, Will you be visiting typical tourist destinations or going off the beaten path? These are just a few of the questions that would need to be answered as a starting point to making suggestions.
A friend of mine is about to complete the "Great North American Baseball Road Trip" where he spent the last 75+ days driving across the US and Canada visiting every baseball venue. He is going to be writing a book about the adventure. He photographed every venue and documented everything from ticket prices to stadium food to where to stay to the "unknown" history of each city he visited. He did not plan to go after sponsors when he started out. He has been blogging about the trip for those that were interested in following along. To begin the trip he bought a brand new Subaru (not specifically for the trip but because he wanted a new car). He also found that by staying in a specific hotel chain he could get not only great rates but eliminate stadium parking fees. He has 1-more game to go to complete the trip.
I only bring this up because now that he is wrapping this up, he has gained the knowledge to be able to go back and approach the appropriate sponsors to help monetize his trip. By way of example he can approach Subaru and describe his experience spending 75+ days of continuous driving on the road, the route he took, etc. and see if Subaru thinks that leveraging all the "content" he cataloged along the way would be useful to them as a sponsor. He can do the same for the hotel chain, etc.
I hope this example helps you begin thinking through this scenario in more detail.
Promote a global cause - specifically in health and wellness, Education for All or humanitarian causes; you should get sponsors from associated organizations and companies having these as part of their CSR activities. But be sure that you are serious about these and not taking them up for drinks on the journey.
Do you or do you know anyone who needs money for any reason - for an important need - personal or for business?
