When designing a website, what are the steps for proper SEO?
As a web designer, I want to broaden my horizons and learn as much as possible about SEO so to better serve my clients by providing them with great looking websites that can be easily found by their customers.
Hello Tom, Till now you have received lot of valuable suggestions. Eg: Page uploading time, search proper keywords, image optimization etc. I always prefer to research audience first before setting up website. It is really important that you mention solution to their problems on your website. If your audience find your content relevant and valuable then, they are going to start sharing it which is directly going to help you gain better rankings.
Hi, The main thing is to have defined goals, nowadays SEO focuses on probable advantage via compliance with search engine's guidelines, and that is what every specialized blog/community tends to be about, and mainstream consultancies are in line with that. Bearing in mind that search engines are businesses that generate revenue from advertisements, these guidelines do not give you any cutting edge advantages (the Optimization bit on SEO as in old days) in terms of ranking versus your competitors, on the other hand not following these guidelines or pushing their boundaries can result in penalties that will harm your rankings.
The Google guidelines and consequent compliance will to an extent force you to invest in PPC to have an advantage over more established/popular sites, of course that not all is bad about these quality guidelines, they play a positive part on providing the public a good web experience as well as safety, but make no mistake here if you want to push bad content you only need to put your PPC bids up, which in a way is contradictory. Most of the information on compliance you find in SEO blogs/sites derives from information published by Google, but to be fair, some of these people do quite a lot of testing these practices and report on it generously.
Not meaning to be bland, my intention with these paragraphs is simply to contribute to the thread and add that you need defined objectives that will vary greatly as no two projects are the exact same.

Lot of websites has properly design for seo, but I think On Page SEO will be preferred by google . Meta Title, MEta Description, Website Content is require.
There are many things to do to optimize a website. Firstly it is important to structure the contents, as suggested by John Daniel. So, the first step would be to run a keyword analysis, you can use the google keyword planner (in Google Analytics). You can see from it how many people are searching for those keywords, select the most suitable keywords and repeat them within the contents of a certain webpage (Use them in the headline, headline subparagraphs, within the text). While doing so, try to give a clear structure to the contents and use words in bold and italic: split the text in small paragraphs.
Hi - these days great SEO is more to do with great content than key word optimisation (key word is not unimportant, just less so that it used to be). This is particularly true since the launch of the hummingbird algorithm - content is king - so plan to create exactly teh content that will help your customers answer the question they have in mind. 'If you build it [great content] they will come'
First you have to do Onsite Seo. Then start with content marketing and socal media promotion. For this work you have to hire professional person.
Well, to start the best person to do the SEO is the person who knows his business and knows his audience. Keywords research, find out what are the possible keywords in every pages of the site, utilize Google keywords research tool that will generate best keywords with corrsponding high volume searches. Then use these in your pages meta title, description and keywords. Basically, that,s how on page SEO starts and in regards to off page SEO well your going to do a lot of back linking, directory submissions, SMM activities. Content is the most important, make useful contents and useful only since that is basically the objective of all search engines to provide quality contents for total user experience. Should you be needing some references you can check some of the links below.
Focus on On-page and Off-page.

You mention 2 important points here to serve your clients, but there is one point that isn't mentioned. Let me first take up the 2 points you mentioned briefly followed by the unmentioned point.
Learning about SEO: To be true SEO starts even before you design your website. The point is, you have to do keyword research first in order to plan your website. The reason is simple. A website is in fact a web business. So like any business you would want to study the market before you plan next actions.
To give example, everyone knows resume writing service is a great online business. But it is heavily crowded. If you want to start a business here, you'd want to do some research to know how you could fit in your business. When you do that you may discover that there is a perceptible niche of 40+ age tech executives in health sector who want to switch over to hospitality sector. This is just a raw example.
When you know this you'd plan your business accordingly, followed by domain name, web design, and all that.
Let me reiterate. SEO won't help at all unless there is a proper business plan. You might like to study Moz's SEO guide at http://moz.com/beginners-guide-to-seo.
Great-looking website is largely a myth if it doesn't have 4 essential components :
a) Ease of navigation (aka user experience)
b) Fast page loading (visitors won't wait more than a few seconds)
c) Clear calls-to-action (visitor must know what he's expected to do)
d) Collecting email address in lieu of ethical bribe.
Hope I could give you some practical tips for your business.
Optimize website content based on that keywords
Adding all stuff like robots.txt, xml sitemap, analytics etc
Submit your website in different webmaster account and other important sites
Continue update content through blogs other pages, write articles etc
It was mentioned a few times here already but SEO strategy should begin BEFORE designing your website.
Since you have it built, I would suggest going back through after a keyword analysis and update your content to reflect your analysis.
Next, I would focus on social media, link building, and creating new content on a regular basis.
