Should I be using hashtags in my social media?
You can now use hashtags on Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest. It's no longer a Twitter-specific tool. This tells me I should be more proactive with my use of hashtags but I haven't been so far. One of the reasons may be because I don't understand their full purpose or what return they provide. How effective are hashtags in social media marketing? Thanks for sharing your input.
Hashtags can provide a "brandable" connection to your content IF the hashtag is engaging and memorable. If you're looking to fix on a hashtag across your social media presence do some research then ask some of your most dedicated followers what hashtag(s) make sense to them and which they would be likely to use.
I guess there's nothing better than measuring the impact of the hashtag in YOUR PARTICULAR tweets/audience.
It's an easy 3-steps task:
1. Export your Twitter Analytics report to an Excel spreadsheet,
2. Add a new yes/no column (let's call it "HashtagsInTweet") to determine whether each tweet has hashtags in the body (IF function)
3. Perform an analysis of variances (ANOVA) to assess until which point the average interaction metric (whatever the variable you're interested in) is significatively different depending on the "HashtagsInTweet" factor.
This process may be automated to be performed periodically and applied to several metrics at the same time.
I'd suggest you to use an automated EDA (Exploratory Data Analysis) tool. If you want more details please do not hesitate to reply me.
To be fair, it wasn’t always that obvious that hashtags will change the way we use Twitter and other social media channels. Hashtags were a user-innovation that was later adopted by Twitter as an actual feature when Twitter decided to hyperlink hashtags to search results. As a marketer, you can’t ignore them. You need to know how to strategically implement these tagged topics. Hashtags can expand your content reach, amplify your brand, target your market, get your content found, improve your SEO, and more.
Yes. Target them and only use one or two per posting. Use http://hashtagify.me/ to help you find the right ones. Use them in Google+ post and find yourself on the top of keyword searches for that tag.
Keep in mind, hashtags are for your intended readers, not for you.
Current and potential followers are interested in a subject matter, and therefore hashtags make it easy for them to search a hashtag for their intended interest. So as others stated, be sure that the hashtag is current, relevant and applicable to not what you think your content speaks to, but what your audience is interested in. Those two can be in conflict with one another at times.
As far as the # of hashtags. I too would limit it on a single post, though a piece of content could go across many areas of interest. In that case, create multiple posts of the individual piece of content and tailor it to those various audience interests.
Definitely, you should use hashtags in social media specially in twitter. Keep checking what's trending. You should know right hashtags to be used for your content promotion. It will make your content reach at much bigger audience.
This is a very appropriate question that get raised even in my Social Media Class. The Hashtag is nothing but a metadata tag. It makes the content that get posted on a microblogging site searchable. For example, Currently I am teaching Social Media and will use #smmatapeejay for posting the content on different sites. Now when my students wants to catch up what all I am posted for them, they just search #smmatapeejay.

On the second part: That how many hashtags?
I would like to answer this as a marketer, I feel that whenever I am putting/sharing content online I want it to engage with my audience. So I should have an understanding that who this content is for. It has to be focused. So using more than 5 hashtags means that we are not clear about our audience and its all over. I am agreeing with most here to limit hashtags to 2-3 at the max.
Hope that helps.
Absolutely! If not, then you're only talking to your followers. The way to attract new followers and engage people who would otherwise never find you is to use hashtags. Sometime I even find what's trending (the popular hashtags) and try to post things that relate to my business and also to the hashtag, thereby allowing others to see my posts and perhaps bring them into my social media circle.
Hashtags are very useful in social media. The differing medias will have varying ways of bringing your ideas to life. Per-se, you can use two, three, or so on Twitter; while one would suffice on FaceBook. It also helps you keep tabs on your work.
Hashtags are the Vital tool in the Digital Media Marketing..The purpose of using hashtags are to bind the particular post to a group of that category. for eg. #startups in my post will be helpfull for me to reach my post to people looking for startups.
Hope you got it clear..
