What are the best methods to gain backlinks to boost my business' website SEO?
I've done research and discovered my competitors have a ton of backlinks in to their website, in the thousands. Does anyone have an idea how that is possible and what are the best methods to gain backlinks?

There are quite a few ways to go about this and my top suggestion is to use a lot of different methods. That will give you the most well-rounded and natural backlink profile for your website. Here's some ways that I have used that do well:
-Offer a scholarship. Create a page on your website that students can apply. Reach out to as many schools as possible to promote it. Universities and colleges often have .edu domains which often carry a lot of influence.
-Business profiles and directories. Make sure your business is listed on as many directories as possible. Individually they don't have a lot of influence but if you have hundreds of them then it can be beneficial. If there are directories for whatever industry your business is in, those can be very influential.
-Guest blog posts. Reach out to other websites and ask if you can write a piece of content for their audience that links back to your website. It's a win/win situation if you do it well. You give them a good piece of content for their readers and you get a nice backlink. The issue is this is a time consuming process.
-Web 2.0 properties. You can create a website on .blogspot, weebly.com, wix.com, etc. You can create it on whatever topic you want. So if there's a keyword you are trying to push, I might recommend creating whateverthatkeywordis.blogspot.com. This tactic isn't incredible but in moderation, it can give you a little push.
