What do you think is a fair hourly rate for graphic design services?
What would you pay for design services? I'm a designer and would like to know what the average person or business would expect to pay as a fair hourly rate. I've looked up average fees for designers, but I would like to get a consumer's opinion on what they would consider paying for general design services. I am not asking this a personal critique or as a personal fee. I'm asking as a generality. And I know the better the designer and their reputation, obviously the more they can charge. Thanks!
The best way to get to the bottom of what you're trying to figure out is to set aside what every one else is doing and forget about consumer expectations for a minute and focus solely on yourself and what you're specialties are as an Artist. The reason I say this is because every Artist operates differently from one another and the consumer usually isn't familiar enough with all the possible ways to execute a project to be able to give a reasonable answer to this question.
To give a real life example of what I mean, lets use the current state of Flyer Design Services. There's tons of Designers out there who charge $65 for a flyer design and they do 10 samples for the Client to pick from and have a one day turn around. Because of this a lot of consumers view this as a standard and expect it from all Designers. But what they DON'T know is that those designers have a massive library of flyer templates that are already pre-designed and all they have to do is type in the information. They don't know this because these Designers LIE and pretend like they're doing everything from scratch because if the Consumer knew it was just a template that took them all of 3 minutes to do they'd want to only pay $8 for it and would want to see 30 samples instead of just 10.
When this consumer comes across a Designer who actually designs them from scratch, cropping people out of photos, adding effects, creating custom patterns, etc. They expect this same thing from them and say stuff like "it can be done, I KNOW it can because I've seen it numerous times.".... not understanding that one flyer from scratch made to the quality of what they see really can take between 12-20 hours on average depending on how detailed they want it...... AND THEY WANT 10 SAMPLES!!!!... So for you to do 10 samples from scratch for $65 to try to be consistent with the other Designers who secretly use templates is to bury yourself and there's no way to communicate that because they are indeed under the impression that these other Designers are "good enough" to crank out 10 high quality designs from scratch in less than 24 hours.
Another example is how I personally am good at drawing characters, but am greatly challenged by life like Art. There's Artists out here who can do a life like portrait in 20 minutes and charge $35... which means they can do 3 an hour and average $105 an hour when they have a long line of work. I on the other hand would take over a week to do that same thing and it STILL wouldn't look as much like the person as theirs does. So charging $35 would drive my Business into the ground. I could charge $200-$300 to make it more worth my time, but now I'm placing myself in a position where I'm in a playing field where customers can get the same product somewhere else for a 10th of the price within 20 minutes AND have it look a LOT more like the actual person being drawn..... which makes them a better option than me.
Another example is how a lot of projects will have projects hidden within them that the consumer doesn't readily realize.... like a Business Card. If the current standard price for Business Card design is $45, they expect that from you as well, but once they tell you everything they want on the card you'll discover that that one $45 Business Card project consists of a Logo Design Project and an all out Company Branding treatment.... which should cost a LOT more than $45... but because all they want is a simple Business Card it doesn't appear that way to them.
Another thing to consider is where the value and opportunities are with each project. There's a huge difference between someone who wants flyers designed for their Business and someone who wants them designed for a Birthday Party. Someone who needs company shirts will value your services in a different way from someone who needs shirts for a Family Reunion. There's ways to prosper in both areas, but they aren't the same, which means you'll need a different approach in order to make sure you both benefit from the situation.
So what I would suggest doing is first taking note of your specialties and strengths as An Artist then break each thing down into micro functions that lead up to the finished product. You should have a list of at least 200 of these micro functions and even discover functions within those functions as well as variations. That's ok and perfectly normal... DO NOT attempt to organize them the first go around, that alone will drain all your focus, just allow them to come out as they pop up. After you get to a point where you can't think of anymore, look them over and start organizing them into categories and include variations while taking note of the differences.
Start testing yourself with each function just to see all the ways you can do them and track how long it takes you. Once you've done that start coming up with formulas of functions to execute different types of projects. Once you've done that start adding prices to each function and use those formulas as a means of testing them out to see what the overall price is and gauge how fair of a price it may or may not be and tweak as necessary.
A good way to look at it is to view yourself as a convenience store with thousands of individual products with prices set to them which are totaled up at the register, except in your case you have to do the shopping for the Customer because they don't know all the tedious details of what's all included in the final price at the checkout.
I know this sounds like a lot and trust me IT IS.... but it's the only way for you to start getting a grasp on what YOU should charge your clients for YOUR work done the way YOU do things. No project is the same, you can have 100 people come to you for a flyer design and each one will consist of a totally different mixture of functions. Trying to set a base price to it will forever cause headaches because it will ALWAYS lean drastically to one side or the other where you're being severely under paid or charging waaaaay too much, it will NEVER fall in the middle....... EVER!!!!....
From this point on life will be a lot easier in terms of knowing what to quote a Client...... that is once you have all the details worked out of what they want. Unfortunately most clients don't know what they want and want for you to just do something and let them see so they can decide from there... but that alone is a red flag I'd urge you to stay clear of. A good way to combat that is by providing questionnaires to help you extract information out of them that you can in turn look deeper into to discover their REAL needs and pitch IDEAS to them before doing any work. If they truly don't know what they NEED I'd suggest politely declining the project if they refuse to cooperate or take some time to think it over. If they can't answer questions about their Business that usually means they don't understand it well enough yet to know where they stand.... which is what YOU need to know in order to know what what would best suit them. In fact that's why it's a "standard" now to do so many examples for them to choose from because they honestly don't know... otherwise it wouldn't be as open ended.
There's TONS of TERRIBLE practices that have become "standard" simply because nobody could think of a better way to do things so don't let the word "standard" fool you into thinking it's RIGHT. You just have to be innovative and HIGHLY self aware to overcome that. The rest is using your advertising to educate your market on what makes you UNIQUE..... not "better" but UNIQUE.... once you get into a "competitive" mode that starts to eat away at the entire industry because something that costs $100 today becomes $80 tomorrow and $30 next week and 5 for $20 next month and now NOBODY can make a living because we're leaving it all up to a market who would prefer FREE as a price for everything we do.
Aside from that, people who VALUE THEIRSELF enough to be willing to spend a lot of money to get what they need will be turned off by people who DON'T value theirself and their trade. If you don't value what you do..... how great is their product going to turn out?... so this leaves you with all the cheapskates who are looking for an angle to play on who only string you along until you grow past it then dump you on the curb for a "college kid" they can manipulate into thinking they don't deserve anything yet. So don't get so caught up in what other Artists do and what the market expects.... figure out what's right for you and teach your market all the ways you can be of value to them with YOUR way of doing things.
It depends on the graphic designer, and what you're actually asking them to do, if you're asking them to actually build the website instead of just making banners, icons, etc it will obviously cost a lot more. it really does depend on the designer and the experience.

Between $25 and $45 per hour. You could also bundle in hours into a batch job like an end-to-end web design agreement to attract more customers with a slightly lower rate but the whole nine yards. They would then have an incentive to deal with you.

Most recently, I've paid $125. Were they worth it? Absolutely! Was it because they did great work! Yes ma'am! Was that enough? No way!!!
What attracted me to them were who they were as people. Their character. Their desire to serve me as the client. They were just fun to be around and do business with. I never even asked them their rate before getting started. I didn't care. I wanted to do business with them. When they told me, my response was, "You're worth it, and I'll recommend you to others."

In my opinion,Its depends upon the requirement of the client or customers.If you hire a freelancer then it may change you you small as compare to graphic design company.
1. Fair is in the eye of the beholder. What's fair for a small business is different than that of an advertising agency. Also, what's fair in Chicago may not be fair in your location.
What it comes down to is value. What's the value of what you offer. More service professionals are going to value-based pricing.
Remember that is you price your services and value too low it can be perceived that the quality of your work will match.
Also, if you are selling your services to an ad agency or other similar type of creative, you'll have to offer them a discount from 15%-25% so they can put their profit markup on it.

3. You need to do some research within your geographic area to determine high and low. It could range from $25 - $125 / hour based on experience, skill-level and education.

You need to consider few things before you fix your minimum rate.
1. How skilled you are? (Its possible to get the job done in 5 hrs from someone very skilled and can take weeks to do the same job to someone who just started with it profession)
2. If you are a full time freelancer (or even if you are not) You have to pay your electricity bills, broadband expenses, taxes.
3. After every few years, you need to upgrade your hardware and/or software.
Consider all the above cost before you fix your hourly rate. Remember, you resources like computers, softwares are not gonna last life long.
Now the question is how you can earn more?
Consider time as money. If you do a job for $100 and it took 1 hr, try to make it done in half an hr. This way either you decrease the cost on resources or you can do double the work and double the money.
Be wise with your rates
It all depends on your area, where you live, and what the going rate is for graphic design and whether it includes final digital mechanicals or the printed piece or website. In general juniors are paid far less than senior designers and all is negotiable between you and the client. It's what the market will bear. Good designers start at $25/hr all the way up to $150 or more or you bid on the total project with one price, start to finish, and make sure you have a kill fee included in your contract and the number of revisions you are willing to do before charging the client for them.

The competition is global, here in India people charge $8 to $15 per hour, there are things you can outsource, there are things you can't .... you need to keep that handy as web is a small village (fortunately or unfortunately) ...
If I hire someone as a freelancer, I expect to pay $40-$80 per hour depending on experience.
