What factors affect website traffic?
I want to increase traffic to my website. I've already installed Google analytics and just hired a freelance SEO and blogger to help rank the content on our site. What are other factors do I need to consider to begin steadily increasing the traffic I'm getting?
One of the biggest factors for traffic and rankings comes from links.
Quality, authoritative back links coming from reputable domains is one of the most sure fire ways to get the results you are looking for. Whether that comes from editorial content or pitching out your assets as resources, these links are going to be one of the biggest factors in driving website traffic.
Create content that your audience wants and make it available to everyone. Having this type of information on your site is what opens up the opportunity for back links in the first place. While this is just a small start, I can say that it is one of the most important things you can do in regards to SEO.
It is a marathon, not a sprint. Earning quality back links should be done in a very white hat manner that complies with not only search engine policies, but that seeks to improve the experience of the user.
Make sure you're targeting traffic. You don't just want an increase in numbers, you want an increase in your target audience coming to your site (and then once they get there, your website needs to do the job to convert them into buyers, clients, etc.).
Now, to get the targeted traffic, create buyer profiles and figure out where those people are hanging out. If it's social media, figure out what channel and start a marketing effort there. If you've got someone writing blogs, make sure the blogs are geared towards information your target audience would want to consume. Also, how are you getting the blog posts out to that market?
Maybe I am all wet but I don't worry about seo very much, or blogging or back links. I worry most about content. I want content that is more complete than my competition. Content that engages the visitor, that provides the information they want to know if they are interested in my product. I try to stage it so that there is the basic information for those who do a quick scan and below that is everything anyone could want to know if they chose to dig deeper into my web site. I try to be open and honest and to not exaggerate what my products will do. I would rather under promise and over deliver. For the most part I try to have nice photos and pleasing colors.
I would rather attract three people who find what they want and buy my product than 10 who arrive on a search, scan for a few minutes and move on.
Most website traffic originates from one of the following:
1) Search: People do a keyword search and Google, etc. routes to them your page.
2) Social: Via links on sites like Facebook or Twitter.
3) Referral: Links on other, non-social sites.
4) Email: Via Gmail, Yahoo, etc.
5) Direct Traffic: Via bookmarks, browser history, word of mouth, TV/radio ads, etc
6) Paid Advertisements on other websites
As far as how to get traffic, that's a lot more complicated. A very simple, high-level answer is to create an awesome product then target new visitors via whatever channel/source/medium you think is most appropriate. Hard to provide more details without knowing more about what you're looking to do.
Lots of great answers from all the experts on here already. Back links, social signals (such as FB likes/shares/time on site etc..) all factor into getting you more traffic. But as stated from a few others, quality traffic is even more important than just non-targeted traffic but the goal is to get lots of quality traffic of course. And to get these social signals and back links, the best way in my opinion is to develop a consistent content marketing plan where you put out quality content and then allocate some funds to amplify or push this content out. This will not only drive traffic to your blog and site, but it will push up all the pages of your site eventually.
But again, I haven't read an answer here that i disagree with so do take all of this in as there are multiple factors and details such as site speed, on page SEO etc... that play a factor as well.

I have to agree with Sherry or to put it another way “It’s much easier to double your business by doubling your conversion rate than by doubling your traffic.”
So targeting where you get traffic and what type of traffic together with testing (A/B) on the website should help.
I would be cautious of link building as although good back links from authority sites relevant to your own to your site can bring traffic and also help your website page rankings in the search results - the converse is also true links from poor sites in niches unrelated to you will do you no favours in Google.
Despite working in SEO I am a huge proponent of getting traffic from multiple sources so as not to be so reliant on Google for my income (kind of like having a little insurance).
Where you get traffic from in part depends on what your site is about or sells but a safe bet is to go where traffic already exists and then funnel some of that traffic to your site. So just check out some of your competitors as well as your customers to find where they hang out.
I would also recommend that whilst doing all this you take a little time to continue raising awareness of your Brand name online with a little (cheap) retargeting aimed not at traffic but purely to keep your brand name infant of people.
Lastly with regards to search engine traffic don't forget the 2nd largest search engine - YouTube. Good luck with your site.

It is better to have few quality directories, rather than establishing lot of low quality links. Avoid at all costs, buying bulk links.
Google Analytics will help you analyze the behavior of vistors on your platform and measure the effectiveness of your strategy. (google adwordds, social networks, directories)
This question should be at least answered by your SEO person - if he/she is worth their money. Also the blogger should be telling you something similar!
