What general knowledge should I have about starting a cleaning company?
I want to start a cleaning company, but I don't know the processes and all that it takes, or the materials needed. The idea just sparked in my mind when I saw we were struggling with hiring different cleaners at work every time.
First choose a name for your cleaning company and then make sure that the name isn't t already being used. You can get help with this from Branditory.com (I don't get paid for mentioning them, just something I thought could be helpful). They include a domain name which you will need for your website. If you don't use them you should see if the name you chose is available by doing a quick web search and domain search, this should let you know if the name you chose is already being used or not. You should also use the trademark search tool to see it a similar name, or any varieties of it are trademarked. Trademark infringement can cost you a lot! Use the WHO IS database to check if a domain name (or web address ) is available. If it is, you might want to claim it immediately by registering a domain name. Then you will need to register " Doing Business As" name, this lets your state government know that you are doing business as a name other than your personal name. If you choose to operate under your own name then you don't have to do this. You can apply for trademark protection to protect words, names, symbols, and logos. It's less than $300 to do this. Now you will need to choose a business structure. I know someone who chose Sole Proprietor for only a short time, just to start the business. This option costs less but leaves you liable for everything. If you get sued you can lose your personal assets, so choose wisely! Most people choose to form an LLC (Limited Liability Corporation) that way their personal assets and things are definitely kept separate, the company is held liable, not you! You may consider hiring a company to file your LLC to ensure it is filed and done properly. Now that you have done all that you will need a web site. You can do it yourself, hire someone or use something like Wix or Go Daddy to build it. You should know how to describe the services you plan to offer and know how much you want to charge, your business address (do not use a home address, a virtual business address is best if you don't have an actual location) this will come back to haunt you while trying to establish your business credit or open a business checking account. Your hours of operation, locations (may need additional licensing), business phone number, fax, and social media accounts to connect to your business website. I would get business cards, business flyers printed out as well but make sure you have a logo before printing. I guess you could always add your logo later but the sooner the better. Actually... I should've started with this... Write a business plan! They say that businesses who don't write a plan usually end up failing. A business mentor is another important top of the list, in fact, you could find a mentor by contacting SCORE and should make this the first thing you should do. A mentor is there to guide you and can get you down the right path. Good luck... Sounds like your off to a good start and solving your cleaner's dilemma! Hope this helps you a little.
