what is "Meta Property og:"?
recently I came across some sites which use the above meta tags in the head part of the page...
like:
meta property="og:title" content=" This is the Title "
I checked out on Google and found that it is the open graph tags for social circles.
my question is that from SEO point of view is it useful to add such tags to the page or are there any benefits from adding them.
There are definitely benefits from adding them (why would anyone do extra coding/work if there's no benefit?). From an SEO standpoint, og use can help draw users to the site and increase your conversion rates. Anything which can help strengthen your sites presence is a good thing. The great bit with og is it's simplified structure and how well it blends into the social site.

It's mostly used to specify a page title on a social site giving a link the same functionality as other objects on that social site's page. The goal is to simplify things for developers looking to represent a web page on a social graph.
Mashable has a great collection of articles on this topic:

Facebook (and other social sites) also give free tutorials on how to use og with their sites:

You're right - it is Facebook's 'Open Graph' tags. The point being to allow web pages to interact and work with social media properties. You can read more about it at the links below.
It regulates and specifies how your pages are shared. So, while it may not be directly helpful to SEO, if your pages are shared and the readers react to the inclusion of the rich content, then you boost views/readers/shares/etc which is helpful to your SEO efforts and your overall marketing. Provided your goal is to increase consumption of your media.

Sorry - when I was brought to this page it said no one else had commented. Then I comment and see it has been answered sufficiently.
SEO = Search Engine Optimization
So, which Searh Engine are you trying to rank in?
If the answer is Facebook's various searches, then yes, OG tags are very important.
But your probably more interested in the big3, in that case, it's never a bad idea to stay ahead on the webstandards, and more information (meta CONTENT) is never a bad idea for telling the SE's what you are about, but specially, I would concentrate on other things before you waste lots of time adding page specific keyword tags by hand just so you can have OG on every page.
"Og" is indirectly related to SEO.
Basically when people are sharing your post on social media (specially FB, LinkeIn and now Twitter) by simply entering your URL/Link in the share textbox, a new box that shows them automatically the og: image and title is loaded, which makes it a more vivid post and therefore people might share it, like it, ... more; which in turn Should translate into more Pageviews, more pages linking to your post and this reflects positively on your SEO.
I recommend using the og tag.
Hope this helps.
Open Graph tags are intended to offer some control of how each page is shared with all social media sites. It let's you identify which elements of the page, including images, titles, descriptions, URL, etc are shared with social services. The documentation can be found at ogp.me. Social sharing has an indirect effect on SEO in that passing correct titles and images to social sites will lead to more shares and more links. Search engines claim that there is no use of social activity in ranking algorithms - however SearchMetrics has showed a high correlation between social activity and ranking. Making it easy to share by providing share buttons on the page and including open graph tags increases that activity on your pages. If your site has sharable content, it's not a bad idea.
I thank all of you for your answers... I checked out the various links and found a lot of information about my question.
Open Graph is definitely a good thing... We use it all the time in the majority of our projects and have seen all positives thus far in social platforms.
From an SEO prospective I would recommend Open Graph...
Well, In Layman language I'll say OG tag is used for fetching images from your post, Say you have some article that you fell to share over the Facebook or any other social media, site now there are two cases at the first case you are not using the OG tag now when you put the URL over the Facebook or..... I will just show the text part i.e. only the information, while if you use the the OG tag it will show the site content with the image and all the information.
I guess now you are getting the importance of using OG tag. It will help you in multiplying the visitor interest over the social media.
Thanks for a well written explanation in plain English.
