What is the best way to recruit sales reps for our wholesale jewelry business?
We have been established in the wholesale handmade jewelry business since 1985. We are looking for sales reps who visit the specialty gift shops and trading posts. What would you suggest to find the right salespersons for our handmade jewelry?
Sales reps differ in temperaments, and due to eCommerce, there are plenty of experienced sales reps available nowadays, in my opinion. The ideal rep is someone who is experienced in exactly your industry, and can bring over existing customers. If unavailable (likely), it is then important to understand what you want the sales rep to do.
If your firm has lots of prospective contacts and is well known, then you may want a very friendly sales rep. These are economical and can generate lots of sales, but may not be so good at generating new accounts.
If your firm lacks name recognition and want new accounts of the targeted gift shops and trading posts, you probably want a high energy, high money motivated missionary type of sales rep. They can be aggressive--the skill character desired is high energy and high money motivation. Then, after they get the relationships started, the friendly sales rep follows to increase sales volume.
Product knowledge is easy to then attain-- I don't think this is valuable. Appreciation of jewelry is likely valuable. Terminology of jewelry has some value as well.
Are you hiring the sales reps as employees with salaries and commission? Or are you just looking for commission-based sales rep?
If you are hiring a salary-based sales reps: then you will have no problem finding ones, it all depends on how much is the pay. If your pay is at the lowest in this industry then post on Craiglist, but don't expect to find good ones that can CLOSE sales. If you are paying a good salary and commission that match the industry and experience, then post on Indeed.com.
For commission-based sales reps: it will be VERY hard to find good ones these days, people want a stable income to pay their bills at least, commission-based is not a stable income.
Keep in mind that a good sales rep is hard to find, IMO a sales rep should be able to CLOSE a deal. When hiring a salary sales rep, pay attention to his/her previous experience, they must show proof that they closed deals, they must show a closer type of personality, they must have a passion to do this job.
Advertise on and offline, especially in the locality where you would want to market your products. Screen applications and applicants to get the best in experience and reputation. Select the best experienced, reputable and target-oriented persons. You may also outsource the recruitment to a human resource outfit if you so desire.
