What is the best way to grow your Twitter following from scratch?
We just finished the construction of our website (HungerPass.com) and want to market it heavily. We plan to use a lot of different forms of marketing, but wanted to gain a good following base on Twitter first. How can we start?
Congratulations on a great website. To grow your twitter followers from scratch it's a combination of posting quality content from your blog, retweeting content from other influencers that your clients would find interesting. I would also follow all the companies in the scrolling band on your website and people that follow them. You can find all the "foodie" influencers and follow them and retweet their tweets and articles of interest. That will encourage them to follow you back. If they don't follow you back then unfollow them for a while and they will probably re-engage and follow you as a result. Use a twitter management tool such as commun.it (free basic service) to engage, thank followers. I started a @fempreneurship and in one month have 1300 organic followers. You can see in that thread examples how we have engaged. Good luck with your twitter growth.
Tweet about the topics which are interesting and can be retweeted by most people. There are also many other ways like paid followers from SEOclerks or you can also advertise on facebook, orkut etc.
In my experience it starts with identifying local users who fit within your target demographic, follow. Twitter gives you a great list of recommended followers. Don't forget to give to get, sharing others content while tagging them with @ gives them a heads up you exist. If you have a small budget, Twitter ads are an inexpensive way to promote your profile/tweets to a highly targeted audience.
First of all, post good useful content and links.
Look at your competitors followers and who they're following. Pick out the ones who look most useful to you and follow them.
Look at what is trending in your niche and start using #hashtags like #hungerpass
Come up with a article that will educate your followers to gain there interest into your company. Don't come out with a self promotional adds. This will only make them turn away to the next post or tweet from someone else.
It's good to see your website up and running (and btw it looks beautiful). I suggest you get visual with every message delivered via different forms of marketing as well as social channels.
Your business is in the industry that can easily make the most out of visual marketing and generate huge interest from a large group of audiences. May I ask you to consider your question is ill-posed. You have stated that you want people to see your website. You have then assumed that twitter is worthwhile for this. You have then further assumed that simple follower numbers have anything to do with traffic.
In fact it is quite easy to measure the outcomes of such a strategy. When you begin always measure the link clicks on every tweet you make. Use ads.twitter.com or analytic.twitter.com. You will quickly realize the error.
I am sorry to say that your assumptions, for most businesses, are flawed. Let me give you an example. I get 250,000 views/impressions on my tweets every month. That translates into at best 250 link clicks.
Just think about how you use twitter, yourself. You follow 1000 people right. How often do you see any of those 1000 people you follow's tweets? Mostly never for most of those people right? Never.
How often do you sit and stare for hours at a time at the twitter feed? I hope never.
How many tweets do you click thru to a website on? Mostly never?
Well everyone else is the same as you.
If you're seriously committed to growing your following the tips already provided can be useful, but I find they mainly help develop your culture & brand, not so much grow your following.
If you look at just about any expert in a particular industry, you'll see they have one thing in common - they all follow 15k, 20k or even 120k people. Those experts certainly don't know 120,000 other great content curators. The secret to their success is they take advantage of Twitter's 1000 follower daily limit.
Twitter allows users to follow 1000 people a day. If you use tools like http://tweepi.com/ to identify users who follow competitors, you can then follow THOSE users who you've already somewhat prequalifed as being interested in your product or offering. I personally go through lists for clients and only follow active twitter users who have tweeted in the past 24 hours. They are more likely to interact with your organization as Twitter could be their social media platform of choice.
After you follow the maximum number of people allowed, wait a few days and you'll see you will receive a 15-20% return follow rate. You then use the Tweepi tool to unfollow users who did not return a follow to you and repeat the process with a new batch of 1000 users.
You can see why this might become a bit of work, but if you're committed to growing your following like the experts do, this is their strategy. Hope this helps, let me know if you have any questions or comments.
Find people to follow by importing your contact databases using tools that Twitter provides. Then, broaden this action by following those that your followers are following-- where relevant. Be sure to also follow people that your competitors are following.
Do a search for experts in the field who are tweeting. You can find people to follow on sites like Wefollow.com or Twibes.com.
If possible, try to make sure to follow back relevant people and companies that are following you. You don’t want to upset prospects, customers or partners by not
Read the tweets of those you follow and search for tweets on keywords relevant to your product or service. Twitter client applications such as TweetDeck, Hootsuite, and
Seesmic are useful for organizing your Twitter feeds, managing multiple microblogging accounts, and post or scheduling posts from multiple users.
Create lists. By creating a list you can easily segment people who you are following. As an example you can create a list for hot prospects, customers, and one for competitors.
All the best!
With twitter what I have found is you need to create a simple compelling message. In terms of a good book to read and a person to follow is Gary Vaynerchuk has book Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook is great for all of social media especially twitter. Keep on top of you twitter analytics. What I have found is that you want incorporate your URL into your twitter profile and your tweets. Then seen which message is driving twitter engagement and traffic to your site.
I would highly recommend reading Twitter Power 2.0 which has a 30-day how to on starting up Twitter. One of 4-5 books on Twitter I have read. It was the best on many levels, e.g., practical, reader friendly, inspirational. A mus read for anyone who wants to use Twitter well.
The best way to grow your Twitter following by scratch is to be useful. You want to educate or inform your target market of issues, products and content that is important to them. Start small, follow groups or individuals you want to align with your business. These "influencers" can help "build" your brand by becoming a brand advocate for your business. These people can use "social amplification" to retweet your post to their networks and so on. You can employ Twitter Cards that require you place specific code on your site depending on which Twitter Card you use. For example, there are Product Twitter Cards that allow you post individual product information including quantity and price. We can help you with expanding your Twitter Marketing Strategy.
