What is the best way to reach a milestone for number of hits on a website?
I am trying to reach a milestone of 2000 hits at http://socialstudy.org - it is an organization aimed to improve education in US and then abroad.
Any feedback would be appreciated. Constructive criticism is fine, if you are going to be rude that is OK too.
Good content in Plain English is an essential start, followed by putting efforts into good metadata to increase SEO (fundability on search engines) and social media engagement . Twitter is very useful for driving users to web content. Asking other 'like' organisations to link to the site is also a good strategy for getting exposure.
I would aim more for communications with the engagement you have and let them put it virally.
Defining your target audience and socializing the content where your audience "hangs out" is a good way to go. As important as volume is to your goals, you probably would do yourself a favour by following key influencers in the education communities online, or joining LinkedIn groups that are relevant to the content. You might get some good, bad, or ugly feedback on this site, however if you asked for feedback in forums related to U.S. education you will probably get more constructive feedback or valuable insight from people that truly care about your subject matter and want to make the change that you are evangelizing.
First of all I would have to ask why did you set a "number of hits" as a KPI?
Share number of visitors is usually not the best way to value your websites performance. What I suggest you track is some king of a goal i.e. number of visitors coming to a specific page, number of your PDF downloads, number of newsletter subscribers etc.
Once you set up a measurable and meaningfully KPI(s) for your online endeavor, you can track/measure them over time and explore the ways of improvement.

I know that hits don't mean that much, but still it is a measurable goal for my team to work on, so thank you everybody for the feedback. As far as showing the "value proposition", explain the benefits of the website. I define benefits as something you can do, something you can have, or something you can be as a result of using your product or reading your articles... That's more on the UX side though...
Now, as far as traffic is concerned, here is my suggestion....
Start by focusing on a topic. What is your mission and what are your goals? Come up with a topic that will reflect those goals and missions.
Make it NEWS WORTHY. Once you have come up with a good PR Strategy and news worthy content, do a press release. This will get the word out quickly and can grab the attention of other journalist.
Social Media Strategy- Utilize Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, and Google+ at the bare minimum. Video is also a very strong way to convert people and generate traffic. Honestly, I would look for a solution to host the videos yourself. If the video content is great, you will want to get all of the authority and traffic from it. Don't give it away...
Videos- Develop Multiple videos and topics around your mission and goals. Start writing articles, posting the content on social media and linking to your articles from the relevant videos on a regular basis.
You can also embed these videos on the pages and articles. Make sure you submit the sitemap for the website and videos to Google Webmaster Tools. This will enable you to show video in the meta description when that specific page is pulled up in the Search Results. It will attract major attention to your articles as opposed to the other articles related to it.
Stay focused on one topic at a time and break them up into campaigns. You will eventually start driving a significant amount of traffic.
Hi, Seth, The best way to bring traffic to your site is through content marketing. Making your content SEO effective will help it to get to Google's first SERP. This in turn will up the chances of your site being chosen by those who do searches for your topic/genre/industry.
Using audio, video, and content is the way to go.
From a quick tactical point of view, you would need to do some inbound marketing activities by getting referral traffic from other sites. Pitching an influential blogger or journalist in your industry would help.
You could also consider creating a useful infographic on US education statistics and brand it. If it's interesting enough people will share it and click-through to your site for more information.
I went from 400 visitors a month to 15,000 using the above for my personal blog.
Seth - I took 5 seconds to visit the site and first impression was "what is the value proposition"? If you sold a book I would agree the Call To Action is "Buy Now" and you just need Google Analytics (free) to tell you all about the customer journey and optimize (read remove hurdles in the cart) my purchase experience. Then if the book is great give me some tools to share this on social media. Right now the Holy Grail is missing: what do you want to achieve with education in the US? Catch up with Finland by 2020? Give tablets to every primary school pupil? Install smart boards in every class room? Your milestone is not 2,000 hits. Your milestone is a SMART (Simple, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely) "raison d'etre" that motivates people to join your Forrest Gump quest! And please start by saying "no" to any website update until your value proposition has been drafted, because without it every road is a short cut to no where. As everyone says its not quantity, its the quality that counts. Think about who is your target market that to which you want to expose your organization and develop meaningful content that will draw them. Then use social media to pull them to your site. Finally, get them engaged to stay on your site and return to your site. Build quality content. Good luck.
What is driving your goal for the hits? Hits without action are meaningless. All marketing content should Wave (get your attention) and Point (drive them where you want them to go). Use google analytics or similar to check your bounce rate (I bet it is high right now).
Your homepage needs to clearly state what you do. Add the "Social Study" title somewhere so that people understand immediately that they've reached the intended place. Whenever we click on a link, we are transported elsewhere and there is some disorientation. You want to immediately overcome that disorientation by rock-solid yes-you-are-where-you-wanted to go messaging. That image you are using is great, but it is HUGE. I have to scroll down to see any actual content. Gotta fix that right away. And your homepage is titled "Education Encyclopedia Blog" which is confusing. I still don't know what it is that your company does.
Add some meaningful content on the site. If you are strapped for time, use a service like fiverr.com and pay someone to create content for you (each "gig" is only $5).
If you are truly only looking for hits, work your own LinkedIn, FB, Twitter networks and ask friends and colleagues to help your site out by taking a quick visit.
In my opinion, hits are not important, leads are. How many hits turn into actual leads? Leads to prospects? Prospects to proposals? Proposals to customers?
Those are the numbers you should track and worry about.
Hi Seth - The number of people "hitting" your website is not very important anymore. A significant number could be simply bouncing away. Instead, I recommend you think in terms of the number of site visitors who complete a desired business outcome goal there -- a PDF download, a newsletter signup, a contact form, etc. Even tracking those who view 3 or more pages ("engaged visitors") is better than simply looking at hits.

Usually most folks work things forward when they are not totally into it. However, when they know that something has to happen, say like a wedding, or ground breaking and even child birth, they start working it the BIFN way (Backward Integration of Forwarding Needs). Professionals such as yourself in the filed you are usually do this, however, they don't monitor it quantitatively.
I have a BIFN template and we can discuss it offline if you are interested.
The advantage with the BIFN is it is like a GPS and the moment you stray away, it recalculates the delay and difficulty and warns you of the risk. This can be applied for the number of hits on a website if you wish to.

First off I would look at creating content like videos or blog posts/white papers that use REALLY HOT subject lines. Getting people to click the link to read or watch is half the battle. Then start the content with a BIG promise to educate the person so that its really worth them reading it. Then deliver on your promise and ask that they share with 5 friends. You can use leadpages I use them for landing pages to create a page that locks the content until you share it with your facebook friends etc and that generate massive exposure.
