I started a professional networking group 12 years ago. We meet weekly, have predetermined topics for people to select the appropriate meeting week to attend, and a voted on code of conduct. The support members receive from one another has continued to build referrals over the years.
Be consistent - networking isn't something you can do sporadically and be effective.
I would also encourage you to be judicious on where you spend your time and with whom. There are so many networking groups out there - be sure to determine IF any specific one has the type of people you need to interact with. Lastly relax and have fun -

All the above answers are really valuable and my take away is that being a genuine advisor, you will build trust and appeal to a very human connection first, to then taking it into the business field to continue builiding a relantionship with a business-related outcome, that could be new partnership, customers clients...bottom line.
