What should I do - find a partner or sell the idea/product?
Hi all, I have started with selling unique vector icons through one of the major design marketplaces a couple of years ago but unfortunately I don't have enough free time to develop and finish my own website. I have registered the domain, designed the logo and the tagline, and started with preparing the icon packs, but as I already said I don't have enough free time. What should I do with www.icondept.com?
Thank you in advance,
P.S. The actual icons are located at the following address:
The future of icons especially on touchscreen are animations such as the site below:
It'll be bigger than you think and it's just a hop away from iOS and Windows Mobile. So you should get into that with gusto, never mind the site or your web design.
Ideas are not sellable otherwise it would be full of millionaires around. If you have sales generated from your icons you can see if someone is interested to purchase them, or you should use one of those online storefront like istockphoto where they do the marketing work for you (for a fee) and you just cash in.
Why did you decide to start this business? Is the reason still relevant today? If it is, find the time and keep going until you acheive your goal. Unfortunately, you're not likely to be able to sell it as this market is saturated with developers.
If it's no longer viable and you don't have the desire to stick with it, close it and move on. You're better off reducing the things that occupy your time so you can focus on what's really meaningful.
If you are confident in your product and that it will generate income, then you should hire a professional to build your website. Especially one with marketing experience and SEO.
It depends on a few of things:
If you had all the time in the world what would you want to do? (is the time issue the only thing that is stopping you? Running a business isn't for everyone. )
Is the time limitation a temporary thing or is it likely to continue to be a problem? (Sometimes patience is all that is needed)
What's wrong with continuing to sell through the current market place you are using? Do you need a separate website to sell them? Selling through someone else helps bring customers to you rather than you having to do it all yourself.
Looking at your icon sets they look good but not sure what you are hoping to achieve through selling through your own website. Working through another provider allows you to keep your costs down and focus on what you do well, which is the design work, and they can worry about the marketing, payment systems, etc. It also means that you have a ready group of customers ready to buy.
If you keep added more icons onto the site you can keep up a residual income until such time that you are easy to laugh your business.
Cheda: The 4 answers all have value. My experience is that every idea I have been presented, and I have received many being a small time serial entrepreneur, has not gone anywhere if not out of the "idea" or "patent" stage. At a minimum, finish the website. Not a big effort these days. godaddy and others can assist in this if you need that done. If you don't want to make that much of an effort, you have your answer--next.
Since obviously you are a techie you must know other techies with similar interests. I would contact one of them to see if they might be interested in partnering with you on your project/business. However, if you do so make sure you have a contract as to who has contributed what and what is that worth in terms of the equity each of you owns in the company.
Mango salute ( https://mangosalute.com/) one of our clients from Australia faced the same situation. They are running a web based application for online artists interaction and Greeting card generation portal. This offers a platform for sending personalized and printed greeting cards for people all over the world, enabling addition of video links and QR codes. A high-end, full-fledged card editor is included.
When they get much busy with their business, they get forced to outsource their IT works. They approached us to look after their IT works, we are supporting them from them by providing the suitable solutions. Other option is to hire a developer or a remote developer.
In my opinion, to sell an idea is very difficult. There are tons of idea out there. Who has the money is looking for a profitable business. So the question is if you want to take this website to a business level or not?
If you do not find enough free time for it, it is probably not the thing you are passionate about.
If it is, then take a look at your life and what do you spend your time with and make changes so you can have more time to nurture this business.
I checked your website and set of icons. If there are more than what yous how on the second URL the you should first have it available somewhere to show. Secondly contact other graphic designers and ask how do they do it?
Partner up with them and share the profit.
One thing however caught my eyes. The domain tells me "icons in dept". I would ask around 20 people what do they think about the domain and if it matches what the website is meant to do. To me, it does not make the cut but do not rely only on what I tell you.
All in all, follow your passion, educate yourself on it, take actions and everything else will fall into its place!
it occurs to me two questions:
- Do you really believe in this project and have you thought about the development strategy ?
- If you could give an estimate, what would be the present value of this project now and in your future depending of your development strategy .?
From these reflections , I would find my answer.
