What should I expect to pay for a new logo?
I want a new logo for my knitting company but have absolutely no idea how much money I should put aside for it. How much does it usually cost to get a new logo?
Lynn, logos can cost anywhere from $5 to $10,000 or more. So the real question is, how will you be using your logo? If you just need a logo to "prove your concept", to print on a business card, or put on your website, you might be able to get away with creating your own logo for $49 at a site like Logomaker.com (disclosure: this is my company). But if you have a couple hundred or more for marketing and want something truly unique, you might consider hiring a designer to create something for you (check out the designers at logodesign.com for a place to start). If you choose this option, be prepared to spend $200-300 at the low end. If you want lots of options or more designers to work on your project, expect to pay more.
A lot of people will tell you that you absolutely must spend several hundred dollars or more on your logo to make sure you get it right, but this simply isn't true. You can start with a professional looking, but inexpensive logo then upgrade later when your business is making money and you have more to spend on a designer.

Lynn, There are also sites where you can design your own logo if you have a limited budget. If you want a logo for your website or printing of brochures you need to get a high resolution jpeg output. Just Google logo design for these inexpensive logo design websites.
However, if you are looking for a very professional logo with several renditions to choose from, pricing varies depending on how many versions are created and how many revisions you make to the creations. This option is for those people who don't have any design capabilities or like to choose colors etc.
Lynn, It's my opinion...If you are serious about your business...you should want to invest in it. What is a first impression worth to you? Would you trust a $5 plumber?...A $100 roofer? I wouldn't think so. It's very important to choose wisely early on. If this is nothing more than a side business...Something to garner a little extra income then one of the cheap crowd source options mentioned here would work.
If it's something more...Then that's a different story. I say that because you will need a marketing partner to help as you go along this adventure. In the long run, you will be far better off using a local professional to create a logo. A local professional will be helpful in other areas as your business grows as well. You may need a stationary package, website, flyers, brochures, t-shirts, small space ad for the local newspaper, small ads for social marketing...all of those items a local professional should be able to help with. The benefit of using the same professional is they can keep all of your marketing materials consistent across all mediums as you grow. This in the end will add credibility to your overall business perception. It's true what they say about first impressions.
My advise is to seek out some local professional, ask to see examples of their work. Look at several...as everyone has their own personal design style. Pick someone you like and feel comfortable with their design ability as well as their Communication style and go from there. "Simple" Small Business logos can go for $300.00-$700.00 or much much more depending on the size and scope of work. I would ask for around 5-8 different logo options and the ability to three revision opportunities included in the final price.
Once a final design is decided on you should expect to receive various options of your new logo in spot color, process color, black-and-white, and web specific files. in formats like .eps and jpeg.

Lynn...you can pay any price you want to. With the likes of Fiverr.com you can buy a logo for $5.00 (and a pretty nice one to)...Elance.com - name the price. And from a branding/graphic design person who can completely tailor and customize a logo specifically to your business, will cost you more - but worth it if it defines your value proposition and vision.
You have to put a value on your logo - not a price, but a value to the worth of it to your business. Ask here, but also scope out the above sites AND several expert branding/graphics folks - and ask them -

The design work of a logo is not the value - how they get to the design is critical.
As some experts correctly said, you want to have an overall marketing/branding strategy that includes your logo. Having said that, when you find a designer, it's a good idea to have them answer these questions:
* Number of Logo Modifications?
* Multicolored Designs?
* Number of Preliminary Designs?
* No Clip Arts, Original Design?
Thinking long term would be very helpful as you hardly go back to redesigning your logo. Sure, you can pay $5 for a logo, but do you have the time and resources to revisit the design process? Let me know if you have any questions.
As a design and branding studio I can speak to the process and execution. Yes, there are DIY design sites and everyone has a nephew in design school but if you are serious about starting a small business then you want a marketing plan. You set aside marketing dollars for branding—which is developing your logo, font and color palette to support and communicate your plan and your company vision. That can range from $500-$5000 depending on the size of your business, the usage and exposure. It also would depend based on options, revisions and deliverable—which should be a master logo folder that includes eps, jpgs in full color and 1 color at minimum.
So the school of thought is if you want a logo mark for a small home business that is far cheaper than if you are opening a store location or web shop with packaging, hang tags, signage etc. that need a logo mark.
Hmmm. Well - you are no Exxon, Apple, or Macy's so you should be ok in the $400 - $800 price range. Remember - you are not paying for someones time to sit down at a computer and create a random graphic (although this is how many "designers" think brands and logos are created). It takes research and creativity.
Everything from color choice to font style is at play. Don't be cheap and think someone is going to create something that is worth a ____ that you paid $35 for. Let me ask you - if you pay more for yarn than you did for the brand image that represents your business...don't you think there is a problem?
Same goes for business cards. If any of you in here proudly visit the VistaPrint giant and go with their cheap, pre-designed cards, what are you saying about your business? Cheap! Spend money on your company and you will make money. Try to be as cheap as you can and you will always wonder why your business goes nowhere. On another note...if you opt to go with Vista Prints premium cards with a custom design created by a professional, you are in better shape HOWEVER...VistaPrint's premium service is more expensive than most. They simply make bank knowing there are business owners who won't spend a dime making their business shine.

One thing to note with the cheap/low-price logos: Nobody will do a trademark search for you. The logo sweatshops like 99logos or fiver have a lot of plagiarism of designs and you could unwittingly pay for a design that may already belong to someone else. One reason large companies spend a lot of money on their logo (aside from the branding aspect of it) is to make sure they can legally own the intellectual property rights to the logo.
You don't want to copyright your logo. You want to TRADEMARK it. That's a completely different and much more costly process.
Its a pretty good question. I see a lot of my clients talking about it. Here is what I suggest you do. Think about what are the words that come to your mind when you think about a Logo, the chances are the words belong to one of these two group of words...1) Branding, Vision, Values,etc
2) Some nice looking text, color, etc
If your words match with the words in list one, you need a custom logo that a web designer will need to do after he understands what defines your business. This will usually cost you 100 US$ onwards. Whether the logo requires an custom graphic, will use some hand drawn text will decide the cost.
Otherwise, you can simply use some DIY tool or buy one from Fiver for 5$.

It all depends on what you want and how you expect to use it. If you want a unique, custom logo, a wordmark is the least expensive and can vary starting at around $100 probably. If you want it illustrative or with graphics, it would probably start around $300 and go up from there. Much of what you pay for if you do one customized is the concept work. Also, a designer usually retains the right to the artwork and grants you license to use it. If you want exclusive rights to it, there is additional charge for that and can get into the four digits.
Think about how you use it. An eps is the best way to obtain a logo as that is a vector format and can be sized in any way without getting fuzzy (for instance, if at some point you want a sign, banner, etc. You can have someone vectorize it for you at that time, but will cost extra money if you give them a jpg they have to modify).
I will answer your question but I would like to reiterate what Sina said. A Logo should be part of an overall Marketing/Branding Strategy. It is imperative that you have enough information about the audience you want to reach, the competition in the market where you will be operating and other relevant information. All this data should be provided to the designer in the briefing process.
To answer your question:
An expert designer (depending on your business objectives/ambitions) will need a minimum of 3 to 4 days of research.
If they will offer more than one design direction than they will need approximately another 2 or 3 days to visually produce the concepts.
Following your feedback and selection there will be some finalisation to do which will take approximately one day.
So you will need to pay for a 6 to 8 days of work. Expert designers will charge anything between $400 and can go up to $1000 according to their portfolio and the credentials they have. You can get excellent designers for $400 per day.
Designers who are half way through their career will charge $200 to $300 per day.
So you multiply the rate with the approximate number of days required and you will get the figure.
The price will not include the visual identity guidelines. Unless the designer wants to provide it as complimentary.
I do not recommend you go to any site to design your visual identity.

It really depends on whom produces your logo. A freelancer from India is not going to cost you as much as a large design firm in the United States.
Plus all the things that others who have commented said. I'll add to the list of factors:
— Will you get a brand identity/logo usage guide.
— Do you own all copyrights to the logo.
— How much research is done
NOTE: Most of the Fivers, elancers and other such sites not only won't give much communication but do very little or no research.
Some brands have invested $XXX,XXX if not more in developing a new logo along with a brand guideline on how to use the logo in all kinds of visual communications.
I believe on average you could invest between $500 - $2000 for 3 - 6 design concepts and selecting one with 2 to 3 revisions in various color combinations with another $1500 - $4500 for a brand guideline booklet. This would include research, b/w hand sketches, initial consultation, hand sketch review, color review of selected design sketch and final presentation.
I can't believe that one of the comments was to have an artist draw a logo and scan it so you can turn it into a vector. Thats insulting to all designers out there. There are also many companies that offer logo design as little as $5 as Bernadette mentions but you really do get what you pay for. From my experience a custom logo can be from $500 -$3500 and slightly up. Theres a little more than just creating a logo but thats just some rough ideas.
You need to talk with your designers each designer charges differently. I usually charge between $250-$500 just to give you an idea.
Remember that your logo is not just a logo but an extension of the company it stands behind. Think about how you really want to present yourself - with a five dollar shirt that will fall part when you wash it or a well made shirt that looks professional every time. You have a knitting company, to me that means you knit. Do you knit or do you sell sweaters? Lets start with that conversation. I dont know much about knitting (as a business) but I think thats work you do for a sewing store, doing finishing work.
Most of the advice here answers your quesiton, but I am not sure you are letting us help you as much as we could.
This is a loaded question...However, I own a printing company with in house designers, I will keep this answer simple and if you have additional questions, I am happy to help.
Our rates start at $400. $400 includes 3 mock ups of what you have described to us, through a series of questions our designer asks, similar to an interview...Then of those three mock ups, the client chooses the "best so far" and we apply the changes necessary. The package includes 1 hour of additional changes. Then changes are $65 per hour after that.
If the logo will go on product labels go simplistic. 3 scales of color depth from greyscale to full color. Printable image files, logos for website headers, business cards, etc. (Price should come second to the possible places you'll use it.) But yes at a minimum $35.00
Have an artist draw a design then have it scanned into a computer file then change it to vector and implement the fine details for the final draft.
