What advice do you have for managing this supplier/client relationship?
Recently I found a new supplier and placed an order to the factory, I found this factory had a better price than my old supplier so I sent a lot of price inquiries to the factory boss and he answered me day and night. It truly helped my business and we were like a great team :) which made me happy.
But things started getting weird. The other day the factory boss called me saying that he wanted to support my business and help each other make a lot of money together, but he requires me to only buy from his factory. He even told me a story (which came across as a warning) saying that he used to support one trading company and the company made a lot of money through him, but then the client gave some orders to another factory for a better price. He got mad and became less supportive of the client. He said he has a lot of money already and does not mind losing one client.
What he said made me feel very comfortable. I am a new client, I do not expect this. As a client, I think if you want business, you should support a potentially good client for the business that they give you. So for now, I only buy plane models from this factory. The factory boss is expecting me to give him other projects too but now I am hesitating. If he doesn't support my plane model business, I can find another plane model factory very easily. But if I give him more important projects like designing and investing in a molding tool that creates a new product for me to get ahead in the market, I feel more invested. If he suddenly gets mad at me for giving some orders to another factory, I worry he might do something to affect my more important projects (for instance, use my private molding tool to produce a designed product that other clients can sell).
At this time, I just started my plane model business and I'm not a big client of his. Most other factories are not being very suppotitve to my inquiries except this factory. So, for now, I need this factory.
How do you suggest I manage this supplier relationship in the long-term?
