Where do I find the best avenue for hiring quality help for my service oriented business? Craig's List just doesn't give me the caliber of help.
I need help in hiring quality ladies who want to be their own boss and stay while the business grows.
I help small business owners with hiring and we've found amazing candidates for ALL sorts of positions on Craigslist. The volume is high, but if you have an effective filtering process you can find the gems. If you want to email me a link to your ad, I'll let you know if I have suggestions for changing it. The ad, and especially the headline, are often overlooked in this process. It's an art and a science to get it right and it sometimes just takes a few tweaks to increase the volume and quality of the candidate flow. My email is email@example.com.
If you are looking for women to do this type of work you need to find women that are already doing it but recruit them away from their current positions. Example. Locate your local Molly Maids, all local cleaning services. They usually drive the yellow cars or something along those lines with advertisements on them. Find the location that they show up at each morning and in a not so strange way follow the ladies to their first home that they clean. Give them your business cards and your pitch. If you are a good business woman and have something to offer them they will contact you and you just did your official reaching out to your passive job seeker. The ones that are not looking. No ads, just a little research on your part and maybe looking a little crazy. LOL. I prefer to call it resourceful.

Are you trying to sell a franchise or have employees? Those are different mindsets and would need different strategies. One strategy is sketch out what the ideal candidates looks like, and then define where that person travels throughout daily life and what would they read (online and print). Start going to those places, marketing materials in hand and strike up natural conversations (not a sales pitch!). Think about investing in advertising, but not spending a fortune (I just did my first Facebook boost, and for a small investment I got decent results). The most important thing is be genuine and have answers why they should risk their livelihood with you. Oh, and tell everyone you know what the ideal candidate looks like, and ask their thoughts were to find them. You will be surprised the wealth of information your own friends can provide. Good luck!
I beleive you need to network with the kind of person you want to hire. If single moms are unreliable dont network at the subsidised daycare center (no offense intended). I you are looking to create teams with leaders, then think differently about where you know those people are.
I assume from your profile, you are looking for people who will act like owners (so I think you will pay them on a performance basis). Go to networking clubs (look for the MLM'ers trying to make it), talk to people at church (they may know somebody).

How close are you to Ft Leonard Wood, MO? There are quite a few ladies of Enlisted/NCO/Officers there that might just need an additional way of bring in income while their spouse are on deployment.
All of these have been great answers- Craigslist is not a great place to search for high-caliber employees. Especially if the job description doesn't have the right key words. Perhaps you are not asking for enough in your ad. Describe your ideal employee and list those virtues. Mention that it is a new start-up and the rewards of sticking with you. Best of luck in your business!

Excellent question, without an easy answer. We've been struggling with the same problem for the past 3 years. The only place we've made any progress is with LinkedIn, specialty job posting sites and freelance sites. We drive people back to our website, where we've setup a whole recruiting section. As a result we are now getting a steady stream of resumes.
Low quality resumes is a big issue. We get one reasonably good qualified candidate for each 50 resumes now. A lot of blasted out responses who clearly never read the job posting. We've tried head hunters too and for the most part, the only thing they do in addition to what we do is cold call into their network. If they lack a network that aligns with your needs, then they don't usually perform well. We've made a real push to build up our network on LinkedIn and Twitter so we could start cold calling candidates directly. We've also started to use Elance and Freelancer to tap into their substantial networks for contractors looking to make a move back into employment. I wish I knew the answer to this question, we've been busting our hump on this one for too long.
Great question Robin. Your struggle is the same struggle that all employers fight with when hiring. I will assume you have detailed out exactly what the opportunity is. It sounds like this is a ground-floor opportunity for the right people. Once you have the opportunity clearly defined, the next step is to try to create a profile of the type of person that will be a success in this position. Once you have the profile, you can develop a plan to reach the type of people that match the profile. While advertising jobs on Craig's List will get applicants, there are other ways to get strong applicants. For small entrepreneurs the #1 item is networking. By the way, it frequently is #1 of big corporations as well. Whenever I speak to someone about recruiting workers, and they are having trouble finding people, I ask them about their networking efforts. Networking means connecting with like-minded people that you can get to understand your business and then asking them for referrals to fill your openings (but only after they understand the type of people you are looking for).

I would start with, "how have you found the most successful candidates so far?" When you say, "be their own boss", it sounds like the business is set up to find independent contractors vs. employees, so I would start there - what is the opportunity you are wanting to connect for? Who would/could your current workers refer and what can you do to reward that result (not the effort, but the result), What social network do your current workers frequent? What is the ideal profile of the person(s) you are seeking? Who are the competitors in this space and how can you contact them?..Just a start.
Depending on the type of resources you're looking for, may I suggest a specialized headhunter? As opposed to the generalist type who dabbles in everything, jack of all trades yet master of non, the specialized headhunter has actual market experience doing the stuff you want to hire someone for...
For exemple, I used to be a web developer, now I am a headhunter specialized in web and mobile talents. Depending on what you're looking for, I am sure there are a few specialized headhunter out there ready to listen carefully to what you need and introduce you to "la crème de la crème", thereby saving you precious time and allowing you to meet the best.
They're usually well-worth their fees. I know I am.
The advice so far is very sound. You will need to talk to people and determine the amount of drive, desire and initiative they have. My opinion, personal referral is still the best. In addition to the others advice, I would add that you need to ask yourself what are the top 5 traits/behaviors this person needs to show to be successful in this role. When you identify those, then develop 2 or 3 behavior based, open ended questions for each one. You should have 15 or 20 questions total. You are trying to laser in on the behavior they have demonstrated in the past to determine if it will serve them well in the future. If done correctly, you can improve your success rate of placing the right person in the right job. Nothing is perfect, but this method should help you improve your results. Happy hunting...
I assume this is for your cleaning businesses, right? At that level, it's unlikely that you will find many with these self-management qualities. We have a Canadian client, who had a similar problem. She solved it by creating a process, which has many control points when dispatching her workers. This greatly improved reliability and quality. Let me know if you'd like to learn more. It's NOT easy to find people like that. What you really need to do is network and talk to people. Use Facebook. I own a recruiting firm and I'll tell you that any recruiter that tells you they can help you on something like this is just looking to take your money. Your best bet like I said is to talk to people and ask around .I would post signs in supermarkets and even PennySaver. It's not an easy thing you're trying to do...
I understand the pain you are going through with finding quality people. It is not an easy task anymore. When we need help we post on Indeed and the Michigan Talent Bank (UIA). I have had moderate success. I find that if I post to my personal FB and LI pages, I have better luck. Word of mouth is the best for us. We just had our website revamped and I intend on posting our openings there as well.
